Burton Center's Employment Services Program is proud to recognize Ar'Tavis Pixley as the March 2026 Employee of the Month.

Ar'Tavis has been employed with the custodial department at Ridge Spring-Monetta Elementary School in Ridge Spring, SC, for over two years. Ar'Tavis says, "helping the kids keep the school clean, and being able to get out of the house every day knowing that I have a job to do is my favorite part of working in the community”.

Giving these individuals a chance to be productive members of their communities and giving them a purpose in life is the main goal of Burton Center's Employment Services Program.

The Saluda Day Program learned the history of St. Patrick's Day and celebrated with a host of Irish activities, food, music, snacks, and a movie.

Burton Center’s Bobcats continued their dominance over the staff in the annual basketball game held at the Finis Horne Arena at Lander University. A large crowd attended the game, with the final score: Bobcats 76 - BC Staff 45.

Ricky Boyd delivered a beautiful performance singing the National Anthem. The Bobcat cheerleaders provided half-time entertainment, joined by the Lander cheerleaders. Everyone had a great time; however, some of the staff found it difficult to walk today.

“We would like to thank Lander University, Mr. & Mrs. Bearcat, the Lander cheerleaders, Jeff May, Burton Center staff, Burton Center Bobcat, and Helen Phillips, Activities Coordinator,” stated Laurie Cordell, Executive Director.

The Mayor's Youth Council visited Burton Center yesterday. Susan Keown, Day Services and Compliance Director, gave an overview of Burton Center, followed by a tour. Mayor Smith and the Youth Council are doing a great job for the community.

One of the highlights of the year is when Burton Center athletes compete in Special Olympics. They have been practicing for this event, and on Friday morning, they were ready to go!

Congratulations to all the athletes and staff members for their hard work and commitment to this inspiring event," stated Laurie Cordell, Executive Director of Burton Center.

The Special Olympic Games are underway at Saluda High School with Burton Center athlete Mary Jane carrying the torch. We wish all competing athletes a great day on the field.

“I am very proud of Dannon, Chris, and Jon Erik. One of them quickly alerted staff when he noticed something was wrong, and the others assisted until the situation was resolved. Their quick actions and looking out for one another truly stood out. Teamwork makes a big difference in stressful moments,” stated Scarlett Lawson - SLPI, CTH I & II Coordinator.

Lexington Day Program had a great time celebrating St. Patrick's Day yesterday. They had a scavenger hunt, played the rainbow parachute game, and went on an outing to Krispy Kreme.

Members of Burton Center’s team had an amazing time attending the Out of the Park South Carolina Human Service Providers Association conference this week! Meeting new vendors and strengthening state-wide connections, rounding the bases with our current partners, and learning from the pros, made this conference a grand slam!

From learning about increased safety, to data driven results, to work-life balance, and even some new dance moves, this conference taught us so much! Our team is heading back to work feeling energized and ready to implement our shared game plan to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, head injuries, spinal cord injuries and related disabilities!

Thank you so much to everyone who made this conference a winning experience and to all of the great connections that were made and strengthened! Until next season…
