✨STAFF SPOTLIGHT✨

Leslie is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Indiana. She meets with adult clients and is skilled in providing support for anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder. She is trained in DBT and uses it, along with a blend of cognitive behavioral and person-centered therapy techniques. She is somewhat directive in her approach and collaborates with clients to determine what they want to achieve. Her clients have said that she is compassionate, supportive, meets them where they are, and offers them hope.

She considers therapy a success when clients report any improvements in their quality of life. She finds that providing clients with new behavior choices, techniques, and skills to try enables them to make these improvements throughout the therapeutic process.

Education: Leslie completed her master’s degree at Valparaiso University in Indiana.

✨Our final DBT skill- Interpersonal Effectiveness ✨

Interpersonal effectiveness is the final skill in our DBT series — and it’s where everything comes together.

DBT teaches three structured tools for navigating difficult conversations:

DEAR MAN to ask for what you need or set boundaries.
GIVE to maintain and strengthen the relationship.
FAST to protect your self-respect and stay aligned with your values.

Effective communication isn’t about winning or avoiding conflict. It’s about balancing your needs, the relationship, and your integrity.

This concludes our overview of the four core DBT skill areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Let us know which skill you’d like us to explore more deeply next.

✨DBT skills series- Emotion Regulation✨

Emotions aren’t the problem. Reacting without awareness is.

Emotion regulation is a core DBT skill that helps you understand what you’re feeling, why it’s happening, and how to respond effectively. It reduces emotional intensity, decreases impulsive reactions, and strengthens communication — especially during conflict.

Unlike distress tolerance, which helps you survive intense moments, emotion regulation helps reduce how often those moments happen.

You don’t need to eliminate emotions.
You need skills to navigate them.

✨DBT skills series- Distress Tolerance✨

Distress tolerance is one of the most misunderstood DBT skills.

It’s not about avoiding problems or pretending things don’t hurt. It’s about surviving intense emotional moments without making them worse.

When emotions are high, our reasoning decreases. Trying to problem solve while flooded often leads to impulsive decisions, escalation, and regret. Distress tolerance helps regulate the nervous system first — so you can respond thoughtfully instead of reacting automatically.

Stabilize first. Solve second.

✨DBT skills series- Mindfulness✨

Mindfulness is the foundation of all DBT skills.

It teaches us how to slow down, notice what’s happening internally, and respond intentionally instead of reacting automatically. When we practice mindfulness, we create space between emotion and action — and that space is where wise decisions are made.

Mindfulness isn’t about clearing your mind or forcing calm. It’s about awareness without judgment. The more we strengthen this skill, the more effectively we can regulate emotions, tolerate distress, and improve relationships.

✨DBT skills series- Radical Acceptance✨

Radical acceptance is one of the most powerful DBT skills for reducing suffering. It means acknowledging reality without judgment or resistance—not approving of what happened, but releasing the struggle against what cannot be changed so you can free up energy to move forward constructively.

In this series, we’ll explore what radical acceptance is, why it’s so difficult, and how it can support emotional regulation, healthier relationships, and greater peace in everyday life.

✨DBT Skills Series: Post #2 Dialectical Thinking✨

Dialectical thinking is the ability to step out of all-or-nothing thoughts and see the bigger picture. Instead of “either/or” thinking, DBT teaches us to practice “both/and” — recognizing that two opposite feelings or truths can exist at the same time.

This mindset helps reduce emotional intensity, improve communication, and create more balance in everyday life.

Stay tuned — more DBT skills and tools coming soon in this series!
