Surgery Center at Pelham First ASC in World to Use Stryker’s Mako Robotic Power System
Greer, S.C., March 19, 2026 — The Surgery Center at Pelham announced today that it has become the first ambulatory surgery center in the world to utilize Stryker’s Mako® Robotic Power System (RPS) for total knee arthroplasty procedures.
Frank Armocida, MD, board‑certified orthopedic surgeon with Medical Group of the Carolinas – Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery – Pelham, is the first surgeon in South Carolina to perform robotic‑assisted total knee replacement using the Mako RPS in an outpatient setting. Dr. Armocida was actively involved in the research and development of the Mako RPS in collaboration with Stryker.
The Mako RPS, introduced through a limited market release in February 2026, is designed for ambulatory surgical centers and features image‑free intraoperative planning and a robotically enabled handheld saw to enhance surgical precision while supporting same‑day discharge.
The Surgery Center at Pelham specializes in outpatient joint replacement, offering advanced orthopedic procedures in a patient‑centered ambulatory setting.
