“During high school, I realized creating art made me happy and became passionate about doing it any chance I could. I started painting and customizing shoes as my main creative outlet; I would buy shoes for myself just to paint. I would beg my siblings to give me their shoes to paint them, or people would come to me to paint their shoes. It really became something I loved to do!
“After living in the country of Suriname for a time and learning the Dutch language, I became really enamored with my Dutch heritage and felt really connected to my ancestors.
“I studied more of my family history on FamilySearch and discovered that Solomon was a shoemaker and shoe repairman! He loved shoes too! This was a part of his story I never knew and a part of my own story I never knew!
“I was in awe of how close I really was to my family this whole time without me knowing, especially now with my second-great-grandfather. All it took was a couple minutes, and now I better know myself and my own identity and where I came from.” —Carter

FamilySearch expanded its free online archives in the week of April 2, 2023, with over one million new indexed family history records from the world’s cemeteries in the Find-A-Grave Index (from Ancestry).
Records were also added from Mexico (Michoacán).
