In honor of today being Rare Disease Day, meet Kam!💙

Kam was recently diagnosed with Moyamoya Syndrome after years of misdiagnosed symptoms and recently suffering two major strokes- which is very common due to the diseases rarity. Moyamoya is a disease that narrows the blood vessels in the brain and can lead to life-threatening strokes, even in children. It is commonly associated with down syndrome, neurofibromatosis, and sickle cell disease. Overnight, our world changed. But through it all, Kam has shown incredible strength and courage as she worked so hard in inpatient rehab and now rehab at home each day. We’re sharing her story to raise awareness, because no family should feel alone in something so rare, and early recognition can truly make a difference.

In honor of today being Rare Disease Day, meet Josie! 💚

Josie has a rare genetic mutation called MORC-2, she was also diagnosed with cerebral palsy. MORC-2 is so rare that our neurologist at CHOA has only seen one other patient with this! It affects neurodevelopment and neuromuscular systems, in her case it has caused her to have a neuromuscular clubfoot which she has recently had surgery to correct. She was diagnosed when she was 3, it took extensive genetic testing to find this. We started testing due to her not meeting milestones and having sensorineural hearing loss (which is something that comes with the mutation)The treatment for it is physical, occupational and speech therapy. Josie is definitely a light in our world, she is the most joyful and loving girl! Our journey hasn’t been easy getting to this diagnosis as it took us 2.5 years to get it. It has been trying and frustrating at times to know something is wrong but not exactly what it was, but God has been so faithful through it all. God is not done with our girl, we just know it!
