More than an annual awareness moment; it stands as a vital pillar of a truly universal, comprehensive state health care system. Rooted in reproductive justice and led by advocates like the Black Mamas Matter Alliance & FTC Charity, Inc., this week underscores the systemic racial disparities that have left Black women and birthing people disproportionately more likely to experience severe complications and pregnancy-related death. These are disparities that persist regardless of income or education and are preventable with equitable care.
As a foundation of universal health care, Black Maternal Health Week calls policymakers, health systems, and communities to expand access to culturally competent, high-quality prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum care; to dismantle structural barriers that compromise Black maternal outcomes; and to embed accountability, justice, and community-centered solutions into state health policy. In doing so, we not only honor the dignity and resilience of Black mothers but also strengthen the health of families and communities across our nation.“
