My 3 year old grandson, Adler has been talking about his grandpa that got struck by lightening (a story he just made up). I told him that he actually did have a grandpa who was struck by lightning. Coincidence??? Anyway on July 27, 1887, Adler’s great-great-great-great-great grandfather, George William Phinney was struck by lightening and killed instantly. A very sad story in the family, but an ancestor remembered and shared with the next generation.

This book mentions Sylvanus Castleman, one of Stephen F. Austin's original Old 300 settlers of Texas. Sylvanus Castleman was the fifth great grandfather of my husband, James Penny and sixth great grandfather to my daughters Erica Penny Ricoy, Laura Penny, and Olivia Spencer. It is a very interesting read and helps you to get a visual of their lives during early Texas.

Today we celebrate the life of Winnie Johnson Parten, my great grandmother. She was born on 16 January 1885 in Springfield, Limestone County, Texas. She would have been 135 years old today. She was the daughter of Joseph Green Johnson and Mary Alice Downs. She had several siblings and half-siblings including a twin brother, Walter. Though she endured many hardships, she endured and had great faith. I wish I would have been able to know her. She passed away on 19 May 1964 in Prairie Hill, Limestone County, Texas at the age of 79.
