Its a new year so we're going to go over why annual skin cancer checks matter 🩺
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and it affects people of all ages and skin types. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, and more than 9,500 people are diagnosed every single day. While these numbers are concerning, the good news is that most skin cancers are highly treatable when detected early.
An annual full-body skin exam allows your dermatologist to carefully check for suspicious moles, spots, or changes you may not notice on your own—especially in hard-to-see areas like the scalp, back, and soles of the feet. This yearly visit also helps establish a baseline so even subtle changes can be caught early.
Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, accounts for the majority of skin cancer–related deaths, yet when detected early, the 5-year survival rate is about 99%. Early detection often means simpler treatment, less scarring, and better outcomes overall.
In addition to annual professional exams, we recommend monthly self-skin checks at home to look for new or changing spots. When self-checks and yearly dermatologist visits work together, they provide the strongest defense against skin cancer.
☀️ Skin cancer is common—but it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when found early.
