Derm hotel habits:

Check beds and upholstered furniture for evidence of bed bugs. I don’t care how fancy the place is, they have been reported everywhere. Save yourself the heartache of bringing those buggers home and take a look before you settle in.

Set up your luggage rack and use it! Keeping bags elevated limits the risk of bringing hitchhikers back home with you. Keep it zipped closed when you’re not actively in your bag too.

Bring your house slippahs and wear them in the room, including in the shower. This helps limit the risk of you picking up fungus or warts on the feet.

How to travel like a derm, what should I do in a hotel room, how to avoid getting bed bugs, do shower shoes work to prevent fungus

Does your dermatologist use a dermatoscope?

A dermatoscope helps a dermatologist look closer at a lesion for certain features to help make a determination to biopsy or help clinch a diagnosis.

It can be used for pigmented lesions, non-pigmented lesions, growths, infections, inflammatory processes, hair loss disorders, infestations, the list goes on!

I just invested in the newest dermatoscope technology and according to my staff I’m like a kid on Christmas with my new toy!😁

I love the clear detail, additional settings and photo taking and uploading capabilities.

I use my dermatoscope daily to guide my decisions and for careful tracking of lesions for changes with serial photography and photo-comparison.

What is a dermatoscope, how is a dermatoscope used, what if my doctor doesn’t use a dermatoscope

Today is National Exosome Day!

Exosomes are tiny packets filled with signaling messages.

There are many different types of exosomes that deliver different types of messages.

For our purposes, we are looking for exosomes that contain the signals to encourage fibroblasts to make more collagen, encourage other cells to decrease production of inflammatory mediators, all enhancing the appearance of your skin.

Not all exosomes are created equal; the source, isolation techniques, structure (intact), number of culture expansions, function, and concentration all matter!

sources from platelets. Here’s how I explain why this is helpful:

Platelets are the first cell fragment that comes to a wound. They get the ball rolling on wound healing by signaling to fibroblasts to make new collagen, and to other surrounding cells to repair and renew the skin at the cellular level.

The science continues to evolve around exosome technology, and I recommend it as an addition to a well established routine that already includes a daily sunscreen and a nightly retinoid.

Lots of learning and lots of fun from this years AAD conference in Denver.

The conference itself always involves a lot of high intensity learning. My favorite sessions were Treating the Pregnant and Breastfeeding Patient, All about Melasma, Innovations in Dermatology, and Intermediate Dermascopy.

And the evenings were filled with intense fun. Lovely dinners with my favorite plus 1 and fun parties with colleagues and friends.

And I came home with a fun new tech/toy (my MA’s say I’m like a kid on Christmas today in the office🤣), more to come on that!

Time for questions!

Q&A is my favorite.

The last thing I say before I wrap up an appointment is, “Do you have any questions for me?”.

Although we usually gab the whole time all about your skin, hair, and nails…

…I like to make sure we’ve covered everything!
