Allegheny Health Network's Cancer Patient Ambassador program was formed to compliment the clinical expertise of the AHN Cancer Institute with emotional and practical support for newly diagnosed patients.

Now in its second year, the program has grown to include 90 ambassadors providing firsthand insights on the unique challenges of cancer.

The program pairs newly diagnosed cancer patients with volunteer ambassadors who have successfully navigated their own cancer journeys, providing emotional and practical support.

Judy’s been an AHN Grove City nurse for 37 years and has witnessed a lot of hospital firsts. Late last year, Judy became the first patient to have their knee replaced by Dr. Slipak using our new Mako joint replacement technology. On the day of her surgery, many of her colleagues checked in on her and our physical therapy team had Judy up and walking a few hours into her recovery.

Prior to surgery, Judy’s knee would barely bend and she described the pain as “horrendous.” Now, she can bend her knee 116 degrees in physical therapy and her pain is almost entirely gone. Judy no longer worries about how she’s going to get down a flight of stairs and is active at Silver Sneakers. On her first day back to work, Judy comfortably walked 26,000 steps!

Judy loves having her mobility back and wishes that she’d had the surgery sooner. If you suffer from joint pain, don’t wait!
