Vision plays essential role in learning, communication, playing, movement and posture.
As OTs, we are famous for our "standardized" evaluations. We pull out the VMI or the TVPS, and we determine that a child has a "visual perceptual deficit."
But here is the truth: If the eyes aren’t tracking, teaming, or focusing correctly, the brain is receiving a blurry, distorted, or "double" image.
You aren't testing their brain's ability to perceive shapes; you are testing their eyes' inability to land on the target. 🎯
The Reality Check:
Saccades & Tracking: Is the "camera" moving smoothly to follow the action?
Convergence: Is the "lens" able to zoom in on near-point tasks without strain?
Accommodation: Can the "auto-focus" shift from the board to the paper quickly?
If you are only treating the "output" (handwriting) or the "software" (perception) without checking the "hardware" (the eyes), you’re missing half the story.
Stop guessing and start seeing the big picture.
Want to learn how to check the "focus" on your students' visual systems?
We're opening the doors to the next Eyes First Vision Cohort on February 11th. We’re going to show you how to identify the functional vision issues that standard screenings miss.
