As past Membership Chair of the MPTA and current PAC chairman, I have often had discussions centered around the cost of APTA membership and the cost of contributing to the MPTA-PAC. One common thread centered around the lack of perceived value of such membership or contributions and it seemed to be especially relevant to SNF as well as Acute therapists, although it was and remains true across the spectrum of primary work locations. So, I am including a link that I feel shows the value of advocacy for our profession and the fruits it can yield. Our profession will not win every battle but we HAVE to have a seat at the table and friendly elected representatives in our corner.

The MPTA PAC has had a successful year and contributed to several legislators that have been friends of the Physical Therapy profession in Mississippi in 2019. Recent changes in Physical Therapy reimbursements, both at the local and national level, have captured the attention of many Mississippi Physical Therapists and have, highlighted the need for further engagement in the political process. This engagement is unfamiliar for many of us and it is easy to become rather lost in the process and let our good intentions to be become more active fade away. Fortunately, the MPTA and the MPTA PAC have made great strides in facilitating the process through the downloadable app, legislative day, email blast and through our lobbyist- Steve Corbitt. I urge all of you to increase your participation in the political process through these activities, through your direct PAC contributions and hopefully through volunteering in the PAC to increase our fundraising activities and ultimately our contributions to our friends in the legislators. Sincerely yours , David McIntosh

Here’s something I found interesting on multiple levels including the need for the Physical Therapy profession to be engaged, with our engagement needed for public outreach/ branding/perception, strengthening our research and clinical expertise and yes with our wallets to support our professional association as well as our political advocacy. This is what professionals do, although not what health coaches with 6 hours of training do, and I challenge all of you to consider this.

Just returning from the MPTA fall conference in Oxford and was very impressed with the presentations and news at the lunch business meeting. The PAC fund, through your contributions, was able to assist the House Public Health and Human Services Chair- Sam Mims- with his current campaign and we wish him the best in the upcoming elections.
