this piano is gonna be lonely this Christmas. It has spent the better part of 40 years participating in parties, quiet moments of musical reflection, and family Christmas carols throughout the years. this year we are going to Montana to be with my oldest son and his family for their Christmas and the rest of my family is coming with us. This will be really the first time we have not gathered around this piano for songs on Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. the good news is is that my oldest son Ira has a daughter who is taking piano (and doing quite well I understand )and he is buying her a nice digital piano which is going to be opened on Christmas Eve and we will be able to play music at his house, but the thought has struck me that these moments of playing piano at my house with my family are going to become less and less frequent as my kids, who are already scattered out throughout the country, have their own family gatherings and make their own memories , (such as the ones i’m dreaming about now, ) and me and my piano will be less important in their holiday plans .

So it’s bittersweet as I think of those times with great pleasure but also with a tinge of sadness that my kids are grown up.
But… I have grandkids! and they still like to sit at the bench with me while I play Christmas carols! and I take so much joy out of that… hopefully i will be able to be at those grandkids christmas and be able to share music with them ! So life has its stages and there is a season for everything.. , so my wish for y’all whatever stage of life you’re in, is to embrace the moment. Enjoy everything you have in your life at this Christmas season.

Hopefully my piano and I will have many more seasons to play God’s music with family and friends, and I have so much more to look forward to because of God‘s blessings ! so, merry Christmas to all and God bless us everyone!

So, im in my kitchen cooking Italian Wedding soup this afternoon. (Its one of my favorites, but Ive never cooked it myself). Im off this afternoon, and Im chopping veggies and turn on Miles Davis on the stereo. It's cool music..they are "in the pocket" as we say.. Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane , Wynton Kelly.. just kicking it with such a groove.. I'm relaxed , happy. Then I start to think that I don't thank
God enough for the music He gives us. I thank him all the time for waking me up, for the day, for my children, my Sonja..but i cant remember when i thanked him for the gift of music. . and i realize, is that what is amazing , is that God gave us the ability to appreciate , and (some of us to play), these wavelengths that can cause our spirits to soar, take us away from the drudgery of daily life, let us escape into a world of beauty, where lyrics, and chords, and notes, and images lift us to another dimension . This is part of why we are human, His gift lifts us above the animal kingdom. This is why God gave us the ability to not just survive , but thrive and embrace all of the great gifts of our life here on earth.
Thank you God , for jazz, Thank you God , for all my musician friends , who
i have been privileged to play with for so many years. My favorite fly fishing book (which is my other passion besides music),
ends with the author Norman Maclean stating "I am haunted by waters".. I would add to that " I am haunted by music".. I wish my blessings for all my friends reading this, and my prayer for all is that we all embrace the great gifts we have been given, and that we all not just survive , but thrive!!
