The statistics on diabetes in America can be overwhelming, 37.3 million Americans have diabetes - almost 1 out of every 10. Worse still, 1 in 5 people who have diabetes, don't know they have it. Some of the complications from uncontrolled diabetes are:
*Diabetic Kidney Disease- When diabetes damages the small blood vessels of your kidneys, they can't properly clean your blood. Symptoms are loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss and fluid retention.
*Diabetic Retinopathy- Affected blood vessels in the retina can bleed or leak fluid, causing blurred vision and eventually vision loss. Growth of abnormal blood vessels, and fluid buildup causes Glaucoma.
*Prescription Medications and Insulin- Managing diabetes takes time, organization and daily monitoring of your blood sugar levels.
*Obesity- High insulin levels leads to increased hunger, higher blood pressure, and weight gain. Staying active is important for our overall physical health.
*Dietary Restrictions- Managing a healthy blood sugar is easier to do when you're working on diabetes prevention.
*Peripheral Vascular Disease and Amputation- High blood sugar over a period of time damages nerves and blood vessels, making you more likely to develop ulcers on your feet and legs. If an infection develops, your body doesn't get the adequate blood flow to fight it off, increasing your chances of amputation.
