GUTTENBERG, IOWA

LaVonne Jean Herzog, 85 of Osterdock, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation will be held from 2-6 pm on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg. Visitation will continue on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:30 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg with funeral services beginning at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery, near Colesburg. Reverend Mike Ashman and Reverend Roland Waterman will officiate.

LaVonne was born on February 20, 1940, the daughter of Arnold and Avo (Burington) Waterman of Garber, IA. She attended Elkport school until it closed and transferred to Central Community School in Elkader, Ia. After her family moved closer to Guttenberg, LaVonne transferred to Guttenberg High School where she met the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Aryln Herzog. They were married on June 17, 1958, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport, IA. Together they started a life of farming in Osterdock, moved to Millville and then back to Osterdock on the Herzog family farm where they spent the last 61 years working side by side.

She and Arlyn worked hard on the farm, raising 5 children, milking cows, taking care of chickens, pigs and crop farming. Arlyn said “She was always beside me and we were always together.” LaVonne began working outside the home at Christianson Café in Guttenberg, worked at the Ertl Toy Company in Dyersville, IA for 28 years and later substituted at the Guttenberg Community School cafeteria. She took a lot of pride in her work and was always busy. No job was ever too big for her, and she was always willing to lend a helping hand. LaVonne loved to cook and bake, never letting guests or neighbors helping with field work, go hungry. She always took more food than necessary to family reunions or picnics, saying “She had to take as much as her family would eat.” LaVonne loved flower gardening, playing cards, going to dances and being with family and friends. She especially loved Christmas when she could watch her children and grandchildren open their gifts.

LaVonne had a big heart with much love to give to those around her. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with special friends they met from going to dances for many years.

LaVonne is survived by her husband of 67 years Aryln Herzog; children: Kathy (Brad) Scherf of Farmersburg, IA, Connie Horstman of Davenport, IA; Cindy (Steve) Moser of Garber, IA, and Carol (Brian) Handke Dyersville, IA. Lori C. Geuder

GUTTENBERG, IOWA

Lorraine “Lori” Carol Geuder, 75, of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital, surrounded by her loving children.

Lori was born on September 17, 1950, in Lancaster, Wisconsin, to Leo and Hazel (Eggers) Koeller. Growing up, she helped bartend at her family’s restaurant, The Copper Kettle. It was there she became friends with Tom Geuder, who introduced her to his brother, Mike. Long story short—they fell in love!

Mike and Lori were married on October 26, 1979, and spent 45 wonderful years together. They enjoyed boating and camping on the Mississippi River, where they would pick their son up after school at the Lock and Dam to join them, playing billiards, Aggravation, yard jarts, and following their kids to countless sporting events. On Saturday nights, you could find them listening to the Kat Cruise, whether it be in their living room while watching their girls dance or venturing to the party itself. Many of these beloved traditions later continued with their grandchildren.

Lori found joy in working with people. She spent many years waitressing at Doug’s Steakhouse, where she made lasting friendships and brightened every customer’s day. Later, she discovered her true passion at Kids Kampus, helping to nurture and teach young children. She will forever be remembered as “Miss Lori” by the many children whose lives she touched.

Lori loved celebrating holidays and always went above and beyond to make them special for her family. She took great pride in her home—decorating for every season and tending to her beautiful flowers. Many local children remember her house for its festive Halloween decorations and her tradition of handing out full cans of pop to trick-or-treaters. But more than anything, Lori’s greatest joy was her grandchildren. She made sure each and every one of them felt loved unconditionally.

Lori is survived by her children: Todd (Laura) Koeller, Holly (Nick) Brown, and Jessie (Dan) Bittner; grandchildren Caleb, Cole, Alyvia, Austen, Seth, Destiny, RuthAnn, and Hali; seven great-grandchildren; and many brother- and sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Mike; her parents, Leo and Hazel Koeller; parents-in-law, Don and Jean Geuder; siblings Duane, Carson, Joe, Charlie, Sandy, and Pat; in-laws Tom and Barb; and nephew Rick.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Guttenberg Hospital, Dr. Johnson along with his team, and the University of Iowa Hospital for their compassionate care.

Services honoring Lori will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral service to commence at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Guttenberg City Cemetery, with Reverend Mike Ashman officiating.

Nancy B. Gull

GARNAVILLO, IOWA

Nancy Belle Taylor Gull died peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the Tower Living Center in Garnavillo at 100 years of age. Nancy was born October 7, 1925, in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of William H. Taylor and Alice (Janes) Taylor.

Nancy trusted Jesus Christ as her Savior on April 18, 1934, at eight years old. This was the most important event in her life and directed her focus to the end. On May 6, 1937, at age 11, she watched the Hindenburg airship pass over her school in Hartford. It exploded while docking in Lakehurst, NJ. On December 7, 1941, Nancy remembered coming home from the Sunday evening gospel service as newsboys were crying the news of the Pearl Harbor attack. Her older brother Billy enlisted in the US Navy shortly after at age 17. (While he was deployed, the Japanese Imperial Navy paid for a floral arrangement to be delivered to the family home with a note reading, "Deepest sympathy, JIN," implying her brother was killed in action. But this was just an attempt at psychological warfare, and Billy returned home safely after his tour was complete.) During WWII, Nancy was a civil defense volunteer, monitoring and recording incoming planes, on alert for enemy bombers. Nancy was the only one in her civil defense training able to distinguish between the odors of 20 different poisonous gases.

After the war, Nancy met General Jonathan Wainwright in a parade viewing stand shortly after he was released from a Japanese POW camp. After graduating from high school, Nancy worked for Sears Roebuck selling guns and then worked for the Fuller Brush Company. On January 27, 1956, Nancy married Larry Lew Gull in East Hartford, CT. They made their home on a farm north of Garnavillo, Iowa, and were happily married for nearly 58 years before Larry was taken home to heaven in 2013. Nancy was well known for her hospitality and her earnest prayers for all who knew her.

Nancy is survived by her two sons: Kevin (Jackie) Gull of Guttenberg and Timothy (Tina) Gull of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren: Audra (Steven) Janes of Garnavillo, Rachel (Ethan) Entsminger of Manchester, Jenn (Adam) Kutsch of Delmar, Spencer Gull of Garnavillo, Lydia (Josh) Sax of Coralville, and Jule (Kenny) Day of Cedar Rapids; six great-grandchildren: Aiyana and Rowan Janes, Otto Entsminger, Jasper and Atticus Kutsch, and Griffin Day; and her sister, Susan Heller of Granby, CT. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Larry and her brother, Bill Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to 27918 Hwy 52, Guttenberg IA, 52052, where donations will be made to local charities and organizations. Visitation will be held from 9 - 11 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Garnavillo Gospel Hall, 506 S Washington St., Garnavillo, Iowa where funeral service will commence at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Dorothy Ann Burkle

DYERSVILLE, IOWA

It is with great sadness to share that Dorothy (Scherbring) Burkle, a dearly loved wife and mother, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. She was 89 years old.

Born on June 14, 1936, to Abbie and Albert Scherbring (Petersburg, Iowa) Dorothy grew up on the family farm instilling in her a love for farming, working hard, perseverance and tenderheartedness. Dorothy was supremely dedicated to her family. She filled their lives with much love, care, laughter, an example of hard work, and mostly by being a faithful Christian. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 65 years, Delbert, and her five children Pat (Lisa) Burkle, Kate (Ron) Lueken, Margie Burkle, Anne (Brandon) Thomas, and Terry (Jennifer) Burkle, as well as her siblings Tom (Dianne) Scherbring and Alice (Harold) Schilling and in-laws Donald Burkle, Leander (Lavonne) Burkle, and Delores Burkle. Dorothy had 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Her children and family were her pride and joy. The only thing held in higher regard was her love for Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. She prayed daily; her favorite spot was being in church. Even in her last days, her faithfulness to Jesus did not waiver. We are reminded as shared in Galatians 5:22-23 that our life work is to glorify God; to produce fruits of the spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Romans 8:28 shares that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.

Private family visitation will be held at Kramer-Morris Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 3, 2025, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. Rev. George Midiangu will officiate with Deacon Keith McCarraher assisting. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, Kris Osterhuas, and Hawkeye Care facility, especially Marie and Pam, for the wonderful care of Dorothy.

Daniel is survived by his beloved wife Jennifer Goerdt; his four sons, Donald (Carla) Snyder, Bob Snyder, Thomas (Lauren) Goerdt, and Chris (Mila) Goerdt; and his treasured grandchildren, Chloe Snyder, Audrey Snyder, and Lilliana Goerdt. He is also survived by his loving siblings, Patricia (Eldon) Ries, Cheryl (Robert) Greenwood, and Terry (Mary Jo) Goerdt, Father-in-Law Robert Shannon, Shannon Family Members, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, nephews Jeff and Ryan Ries, mother-in-law Helen Shannon, brother-in-law Richard Philbrick, grandparents, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Daniel will be remembered for his gentle spirit, quick wit, love of baseball (a 1968 Beckman High School Blazers championship player) and unwavering devotion to his family. He had a warm smile for everyone he met and a way of making people feel at ease. His legacy of love, laughter, and integrity will live on in all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Daniel’s memory to a charity of your choice, in keeping with his generous and compassionate spirit.
