Cortisol is a crucial steroid hormone from the adrenal glands that manages stress, metabolism (blood sugar, fats, proteins), inflammation, blood pressure, and the sleep-wake cycle, working as the body’s “alarm system” by boosting energy for the fight-or-flight response, with levels naturally peaking in the morning and dropping at night; however, consistently high or low levels, often from chronic stress, can signal conditions like Cushing’s syndrome (too high) or Addison’s disease (too low), causing symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, anxiety, and skin issues, requiring medical evaluation.
