Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70? Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.—but prevention and early detection can save lives.

Here are dermatologist-approved ways to help protect your skin:

✅ Check your skin every month and see a board-certified dermatologist if you notice anything new, changing, or unusual.
✅ Visit your dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam.
✅ Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily—and don’t forget your lips.
✅ Protect yourself with sun-protective clothing, UV-blocking sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
✅ Seek shade during peak sun hours.
✅ Avoid tanning beds.

Dr. Ravits’ favorite thing about the spring is going for a bike ride and enjoying the warm weather—so enjoy the season and be sun safe. 🚲 UV rays are strongest during the day (10AM-4PM). Even on cloudy days, the sun can still damage your skin.

1) Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and lip balm with SPF about 30 minutes before heading out. Don’t skip often-missed spots—your nose, tops of your ears, back of your neck, and backs of your legs.

2) Bring a travel-sized sunscreen in your pocket or bag and reapply every two hours (or sooner if you’re sweating). It’s an easy way to prevent burns and long-term sun damage.

3) Sun-safe smart gear:
• UPF (sun-protective) long sleeves and leggings or long pants
• UV-protective sunglasses to shield your eyes from sun, dust, and wind
• A bike helmet with a visor or a thin cycling cap (underneath the helmet) to protect your scalp and face

4) Plan rides for the early morning or evening to avoid the harsh midday rays, and choose shaded routes when possible.

Enjoy the ride! 👩🏻‍⚕️

It’s almost opening day! ⚾️ Here are some great tips for staying safe the next time you catch a ballgame:

1) Choose a wide-brim hat instead of a baseball cap for better coverage—this protects areas like your ears, neck, and chest.

2) Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to all exposed skin—including your face, hands, forearms, ears, and the back of your neck—even if you’re wearing a hat. Reapply halfway through the game, or more often if you’re sweating.

3) Protect your eyes with wraparound style, UV blocking sunglasses which block 99–100% of UVA and UVB rays. This prevents eye damage, lowers skin cancer risk, and reduces the need to squint.

4) When picking seats, opt for shade whenever possible to help reduce sunburn, improve visibility, and keep cooler—but remember, sunscreen is still important when moving around the stadium.

Enjoy! 👩🏻‍⚕️

Keep your skin looking beautiful for spring and beyond with these sun protection essentials:

1) Even if the date seems fine, toss any sunscreen where the texture, consistency, or smell feels off. Heat and humidity degrade sunscreen ingredients, making them less effective—so if it sat in a hot car, beach bag, or humid bathroom last summer, it won’t offer the same protection and can leave you at risk for sunburn. 🛑

2) Stock up on a new SPF 30+ sunscreen and lip balm with SPF. Have them ready before your current ones run out. Pro tip: When you open a new bottle, write the date on it. 🧴

3) Check your closet for your wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Keep them by your front door (next to your keys and bag) so they’re easy to grab on your way out. 👒

4) Add UPF clothing to your wardrobe. Sun-protective clothing helps maximize coverage, so less skin is exposed to harmful UV rays. 🩱

Stay safe and enjoy the spring! 👩🏻‍⚕️

Healthy nails are an important part of overall skin health. Simple habits—like keeping nails clean and dry, moisturizing regularly, trimming properly, and protecting your hands during cleaning—can help prevent common nail problems.

Dermatologists are experts in skin, hair, and nails, so if you notice swelling, pain, changes in your nails, or a dark streak across a nail, it’s important to have it evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist.

If you have concerns about your nails or nail health, our office is here to help. Thanks to our colleagues at the American Academy of Dermatology for inspiring this post! 👩🏻‍⚕️

Your skin deserves a check-in! 🪞

Take a few minutes for a self-skin exam — it could save your life. Watch for:
• New or unusual spots or growths
• Moles, freckles, or birthmarks that change in size, color, or shape
• Rough patches, sores, or bumps that don’t heal
• Spots that itch, hurt, bleed, or scab

✨ Where to check: scalp, face, ears, chest, back, arms, hands, nails, legs, feet, soles, and even between your toes. A mirror and good lighting help!

If you notice anything suspicious, schedule an appointment with us right away. Early detection makes all the difference.

💛 Share this with someone you care about and make skin health a year-round priority. For a step-by-step guide, visit The Skin Cancer Foundation’s link! 👩🏻‍⚕️
