County Executive Tedesco joined the Board of Commissioners last night to honor Bergen County's Veteran of the Month of January, Sergeant Carlos Goyenechea, presenting him with a medal of service and a certificate of recognition.
Sergeant Goyenechea enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served from 1985 to 1991. Mr. Goyenechea served with the 82nd Airborne Division as a finance specialist. He was promoted to Sergeant, then Operations Sergeant. He earned Jumpmaster qualification and was named Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for his unit.
He was also selected to represent the 82nd Airborne Division during the 45th anniversary of D-Day, parachuting into Sainte-Mère-Église, France. His deployments included service with the 2/505th Parachute Infantry Regiment supporting the Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai, Egypt, as well as service with Division Headquarters during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
Following his military service, he continued serving the public through a distinguished law enforcement career, rising to the rank of Captain with the Secaucus Police Department.
Mr. Goyenechea has lived in Maywood for over 30 years with his wife, Maureen, and is the proud father of two sons.
While we can never thank our veterans enough for all they have done for us, we can honor and respect them every single day- which is exactly what we do here in Bergen County. Thank you to Mr. Goyenechea for his service to our nation and for joining us yesterday.
