🍁 Fall in Western Maryland is beautiful — but for many, the shorter days and colder weather can bring more than just sweater season. If you’ve noticed changes in your mood or energy, you might be experiencing the “autumn blues.”
You don’t have to face this seasonal shift alone. Expert help is available right here in our community.
Our CEO, Jeff O’Neal, recently joined NewsTalk 103.7 for an important conversation about mental health. 💙 He discussed the resources available in our community, how we can support one another, and the importance of recognizing the signs when someone might need help.
Curtis Meyer, a peer recovery coach at Meritus, knows firsthand the journey of addiction and recovery. Through the Meritus Crisis Center, Mental Health Urgent Care, and new support programs, he’s helping others take their first steps toward healing.
🎉 Last Thursday, we celebrated the incredible career of Sharon Gladfelter! With nearly 61 years of faithful service to Brook Lane, Sharon has been a true cornerstone of our mission and community. Fireworks on Independence Day has been a tradition since the founding of our nation. While they bring entertainment and joy for many, let's not forget about those with PTSD. 🩵
It is not uncommon for the sounds, light or smells to cause distress for those who served in combat or went through a fire, explosion or gun violence.
How to support loved ones with PTSD during the holiday:
- Offer words of support
- Remind the person that they are safe in the present moment
- Offer to do a breathing technique or mindfulness activity
If you're hosting a party:
- Notify guests ahead of time if fireworks are a part of the celebration and what time they will begin.
- Consider using sparklers or light shows as an alternative
- Create space so that guests can be in small groups rather than a large crowd
