National Philanthropy Day is celebrated annually on November 15. This day signifies the importance of working together for the common good. Philanthropic deeds come in all different shapes and sizes — charitable giving, volunteering, etc. — and on National Philanthropy Day, no act of kindness goes unnoticed. President Reagan first proclaimed November 15 as National Philanthropy Day in 1986, and communities all throughout the world have celebrated the importance of this occasion ever since. Happy 45th Birthday, Hospice of Washington County! In 1980, in Washington County—and indeed much of Maryland—there were no hospice services, leaving families to navigate the end of life on their own. It was Dr. Frederic H. Kass III’s commitment to compassionate care that led him to help launch Hospice of Washington County. In the beginning, it was grassroots, volunteer-driven effort. “It was really bare bones,” Dr. Kass recalls. “We were simply trying to help patients and their families however we could.” In those early days, the scope of care was limited by available resources—but a major turning point came in 1989 when Medicare began reimbursing hospice services. This shift allowed Hospice of Washington County to evolve into a more structured, interdisciplinary program that included nurses, social workers, chaplains, and health aides. Here’s to 45 more years! Today, we pause to recognize and celebrate the brave men and women who have served our country with honor and selflessness. Their patriotism and sacrifice have shaped the freedoms we enjoy.

At Hospice of Washington County, we hold this day close to our hearts, especially as we celebrate the veterans in our own community. Thank you to all who have served and continue to serve.
