The holiday season can be a time of busyness and stress, which is why it is important to be mindful of the sensory input that is unique to this time of year. Christmas time offers many different sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and textures. We encourage everyone to take the time to experience and enjoy this seasonal sensory stimulation.

The following are some suggestions and we welcome everyone to share how they experience the senses of the season.

Drive or walk through your neighborhood and look at the beauty of Christmas decorations and lights. Go on a Christmas decoration scavenger hunt. Discover how many different color schemes in Christmas lights on homes, how many different figures displayed in yards, how many Christmas trees are seen through windows, how many wreaths on doors, and how many candles in windows.

Listen to Christmas music or watch a Christmas movie.

Breathe in the scents of Christmas, the pine of trees and greenery, cinnamon on pinecones, and sugar cookie scented candles.

Eat a Christmas cookie or a candy cane, close your eyes, and savor the flavor.

Discover the textures of wrapping paper and ornaments, the glitter on cards and ribbons, or the prickliness or smoothness of pine needles.

There are so many sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and textures of this season. Take the time to discover them and enjoy them….and don’t forget to breathe.

The Holiday Season is a time for joy, fun, family, and friends, but it's also a time of stress, struggle, sadness, and loneliness. Every year there are people with extra struggles and pain and many will be hurting for reasons that are too many to try to list. We encourage everyone to reach out to others if you can. Send a text, make a call, drop off a card or a gift. Make your presence known to others, you might be a shimmer of light in their darkness. If you are among those who are struggling, seek out others if you can, send a text, make a call, drop off a card or a gift. You might find a shimmer of light in your own darkness.

Stay tuned for some mindfulness activities to do during this holiday season that will help you to be present….and don’t forget to breathe.
