You don't even need a 'reason' to get acupuncture.

It's great for all the things.

Number one, it gives you a much-needed break from that sympathetic (fight, flight, or freeze) state you constantly battle.

It is the ultimate stress reliever, triggering a release of your natural endorphins, and enkephalins (good feeling opioid-like hormones), which help you relax and relieve body aches and pains.

Most of the time, people come in not knowing what to expect, feeling a little nervous and unsure, and leave with a renewed energy, relaxed to a point that is almost unattainable on your own.

Try it for yourself... it's the new (old) spa treatment for your body, mind, and spirit.

Who knew such a simple act could make such a difference in your health?

Did you know the practice of gratitude, whether it's a daily meditation or keeping a gratitude journal, improves your mental well-being as well as your physical?

In studies, students were able to improve their GPAs, raise their self-confidence and improve their outlook on life.

This is true in any population of people. There have been studies done on veterans suffering from chronic pain and symptoms of PTSD, aging adults, young children... you name it.

By changing your outlook on life and looking at things in a positive light - what you are grateful for, experiences, people, places, things, etc. If you take the time to notice it and really appreciate things - your whole life will change.

What are you grateful for?

Today - I am grateful for my (since passed) dog Grizzly - she was such a light in my life and though it was so hard to see her go and that was awful, (almost 2 years ago now...) I still think about her often and miss her presence but I am forever grateful for that relationship and bond that will always and forever be with me.

Feeling stuck? Stagnant, irritable, annoyed? Having body aches and pains that seem to have appeared out of nowhere? Rib tension, shoulder pain, tight upper back?

In Chinese medicine, we talk a lot about how our lives relate to the universal energy of our surroundings, mainly the seasons and the flow of nature. Right now we are in a transition between Winter (Water Element), Earth (a transition element), and Springtime (Wood Element).

Even though it still feels like winter, we can all feel the change in the air. So, what does this mean, and how does that relate to my emotions and body pains, you ask?

Springtime is a time for new growth, the birth of things, the emergence of budding plants, and a coming out of hibernation. The energy it takes to make these things happen is beneath the surface and a big effort. In order to make all these things happen, we have to reach a carrying capacity of built-up energy to push through (think childbirth, seeds sprouting through the ground, buds finally making their way up and out). *sort of how your feeling? Stuck, frustrated, and uncomfortable?*

We call this Liver qi stagnation in Chinese medicine. This stuckness of energy creates emotions such as anger, irritability, and frustration before it gives way to relief, and ease.

This energy is what creates a world where we work through some s**t to come out on the other side, good and bad. This energy can manifest as physical pains, joint issues, body aches, and tension most often.

So, what to do about it? Sit with your discomfort, know that this too, shall pass. Breathe. Practice self-care and use all your relaxation tricks. Visualize those characteristics of nature coming to life in the spring and manifest that into your world. Get Acupuncture. Support your detox pathways (the Liver system, both allopathically speaking and Chinese medicinally). Move, exercise, work all that stuck energy out.

My favorite herb for this time of year is Free and Easy, or Xiao Yao San for Liver Qi Stagnation. *To order please see link in bio*

The world is just better when we are kind to one another.

We are each fighting a behind-the-scenes battle that no one knows about and most of us are really good at hiding it. So, remember to just be kind - you can choose to make or break someone's day. Most of the time, small acts don't take a whole lot of effort, just a smile, holding a door, saying hello, or asking how somebody is... and turns out, you get a boost of happy from that as well... so win-win.

Be kind. πŸ™Œ

In an effort to continually source good quality, toxin-free, chemical-free, and mold-free foods in our house, one of the cabinets that has been a struggle to debunk is the spice cabinet. Turns out, most of us should just toss it all and start over... really. *which I'm about to do after reading all about this*

Did you know, there isn't much regulation on what goes in your spices... cleanliness standards are weak at best - as in most of your ground spices contain 'natural defects' like bugs, rat hair, mold, and other foreign matter... yep, you read that 100% correctly.

So how do we source a good product?

Number one - if you can grow it yourself, source it locally or from a small farm, and can easily look into their use of pesticides, and how they process their farm to foods then that's a great start.

Number two, whole herbs rather than ground are your go-to.

Number three, if you can somehow find out if your source does any third-party testing for things like toxins or molds that's an even bigger plus.

I"m still looking for the perfect source... I'll keep you posted...

In the meantime, check out more in this article - she has some good companies that she suggests and I will look into myself.

A detailed look into the 'do's and 'don'ts' of purchasing spices.

OVER 300!

Yep, and all these tiny points connect larger pathways, that flow around the body like a waterway connecting organ systems, muscles, tissues, and joints.

What's more, each point works in a general way to support the organ system it's connected to but individually they do very specific things on their own. For example, the lung meridian is our first line of defense, it is very associated with our immune response and we treat the lung meridian in cases of cold/flu, allergies, and other symptoms of sickness where there may be a compromised immune system or actual symptoms in the lungs.

Individually, for example, if you have a cough with yellow sputum and phlegm and a fever, Lung 5 (in the crease of your elbow) will treat that, along with any elbow pain you might have.

Whereas, you would treat the onset of a cold or flu with more mild symptoms, congestion, runny nose, and headache with a different point, Lung 7 (which likes on the radial side of the wrist). This point also treats neck pain and edema.

Acupuncture is so much more than what it seems and the range of symptoms and dis-ease we can treat as part of an integrative therapeutic plan or on its own is really remarkable.

What goes up, must come down. This is the concept of Yin and Yang. We are ever-changing beings, constantly learning from mistakes, climbing out from the darkness to experiences moments of pure bliss only to fall back again.

This is life. We are all on our own journey. Yours is one that is all your own. Every memory, every thought, and every experience you have makes you one of a kind. Every choice you make takes you on a unique path, every action you take makes you who you are.

Your thoughts influence your words, your words influence your intentions, your intentions influence your body language, and all of it influences your health - body, mind, and spirit.

Learn to let go and go with the flow of life. Learn from the bad, embrace the good and accept that it may never turn out exactly as you wanted, but it is the experience that you needed.

This is something I have to talk myself through almost every day. But, I breathe, I do my best to let go and let things flow. I set good intentions, I learn, I sit with discomfort, I do my best to stay present and let that s**t go. Cause when it comes down to it... you are the only you in charge of your emotions - your thoughts and your actions.

My Story

Health and wellness has always been a focus of mine since I can ever remember. It is my passion project and never feels like a job - I love learning about the human body and practicing my medicine (Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine). I love seeing clients in the office, one on one, using Acupuncture, other Chinese medicinal modalities, educating patients, and constantly improving my skills and knowledge. I love sharing all of this with YOU, teaching you how to love your body, achieve real wellness, and how to live your best life.

I grew up in a small town in Idaho and was a competitive skier and athlete. I got my undergraduate in Integrative Physiology at The University of Colorado at Boulder and, I attended Acupuncture school at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in 2009. I moved back home and set up shop in my hometown of Hailey, ID in 2012. I am so glad I ended up in the field of medicine that I did and I am so glad to be able to live in the Wood River Valley doing what I love.
