You can’t train for an unpredictable sport in a predictable world.
We live in a society built with safety in mind — smooth floors, automatic doors, ramps, bright lights, level sidewalks.
Everything around us is designed to help minimize risk — which is great for accessibility and safety… but not so great for training our balance for riding.
Contrast that with a little over 100 years ago — the image that comes to mind is the iconic picture of a group of men sitting on an I-beam, eating lunch hundreds of feet above New York City. Their balance systems were constantly on. Their world was full of uneven surfaces, unpredictable footing, and constant sensory input.
Now think about what we do as riders. 🐎
We step from this safe, predictable environment into a sport that’s the complete opposite — unstable, dynamic, and constantly changing.
Your horse moves underneath you.
Your balance reactions need to fire instantly.
Your body has to adapt in milliseconds.
And yet, most fitness programs still focus only on strength — not balance, coordination, or reaction time.
That’s why in my rider balance programs, we train more than just our muscles.
We train the nervous system — using unmounted work that challenges equilibrium, body awareness, and control.
Strength alone isn’t enough. You need to be ready for the unpredictable.
Because when you’re balanced in motion, your horse feels it.
💭 Do you intentionally train your balance out of the tack?
