Exfoliating Tips:
When it comes to exfoliating I prefer a chemical exfoliant like AHAs or BHAs.
AHAs or alpha hydroxy acidsā exfoliate by removing the layers of skin on the surface. This is great for stimulating new collagen & elastin. Common AHAs are glycolic, lactic, Mandelic, citric, malic acid, etc.
BHA: salicylic acid goes into the pore, to break up dead skin and congestion since itās oil soluble. You also will see help with inflammation, this is great for oily skin or acne clients.
I love an exfoliant that uses ahas with enzymes, so that as the aha is working to loosen the glue, the enzymes come through, munching off all the dead skin. Enzymes typically used are: pineapple, papaya, rice & pumpkin.
I personally donāt like the use of manual exfoliations or physical exfoliation on the face (brushes, salt, sugar, shells, etc) because it can cause tugging and friction on the skin. If you have acne you shouldnāt use those modalities because it can spread the bacteria of the acne around on the skin.
exfoliations should only be used 1-2xs a week max, unless itās gentle like a rice or enzyme exfoliant those can be used more frequently based on your estheticianās recommendation.
Let me know in the comments how these tips helped you & stay tuned for the next post on ahas + bhas.
