A recent study found that babies’ ability to match speech to faces predicted their future language abilities (Edgar, Todd, & Bahrick, 2023).

The study, which followed 103 children from age three months to 36 months, found that six month olds who were more accurate at matching a spoken language to the correct speaker spoke more at 18 and 24 months, and had larger vocabularies as late as age 3. This skill is called “intersensory processing,” or connecting different senses together.

Researchers suggested that being more advanced in this skill allows infants to focus on learning other skills sooner and learn more from social interactions, enriching their language development.

Experiencing and engaging in language-rich interactions helps children develop communication skills, patience, empathy, and literacy—all of which are critical to success in school and beyond. Even the simple act of handling books develops school readiness in infants. Additional positive effects of reading together include:

- Better recognition of sounds and letters
- Knowledge of a wider range of vocabulary
- Increased listening skills
- A deeper understanding of how stories work

When we read with our young ones, we help grow their curiosity and memory. Stories transport them to places and times they have never experienced, enhancing their understanding of the world. Holding a child close while reading can help them manage moments of anxiety and create a positive association with reading that endures throughout their lives.

A baby’s primary source of nutrition and hydration in the first year is breast milk and/or infant formula. Plain water may be introduced in small amounts starting at 6 months. Other types of beverages such as milk, juice, and sugar sweetened drinks should not be offered to babies under the age of 12 months.

Always contact your pediatrician with any questions or concerns regarding your child's nutrition during their first year.

In recent years, homework has become a very hot topic. Many parents and educators have raised concerns about homework and questioned how effective it is in enhancing students’ learning. There are also concerns that students may be getting too much homework, which ultimately interferes with quality family time and opportunities for physical activity and play. Research suggests that these concerns may be valid. For example, one study reported that elementary school students, on average, are assigned THREE TIMES the recommended amount of homework.
So what does the research say? What are the potential risks and benefits of homework, and how much is “too much”?

To read more of the research on homework, check out Parenting Translator's newsletter at parentingtranslator.substack.com.

Physical activity is very important for infants because it helps them build the muscle strength needed to lead a long and healthy life. The best ways for you to help your infant engage in physical activity is through interactive floor-based play or "tummy time." Contact your child's pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns regarding physical activity.
