This month, BCBDD honors Black disability advocates whose leadership has helped advance equity, access, and inclusion for people with developmental disabilities!

We recognize trailblazers such as Brad Lomax, a civil rights and disability rights activist whose advocacy helped lead to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act; Vilissa Thompson, founder of "Ramp Your Voice!," a powerful movement amplifying disabled Black women’s voices; and Leroy Moore Jr., poet, educator, and founder of Krip-Hop Nation, which centers Black disabled culture and self-advocacy.

Their work and the work of countless advocates today continue to shape a more inclusive future where people with disabilities are seen, heard, and valued! HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

Congratulations to Community Outreach Advocate, Courtney Hineman, for getting the Shoutout Spotlight this month!

SSA Lead, Katie Yount, said:

"Courtney met with a client of mine to share her experience of living in her own apartment safely with remote supports and homemaker personal care. She also invited him to Speak Up, and I think this made him feel like there is hope for him to live in his own place! I appreciate Courtney being willing to share her story and her experiences with others!"

Thank you, Courtney, for being such an incredible advocate for the DD community!

Fun Fact Friday: Employment

Fun fact! Employees with disabilities have equal or better retention rates compared to employees without disabilities. Hiring inclusively is beneficial for both the business and the community!

Today, we have a very special PROVIDER SHOUT-OUT from SSA II, Michelle Brunner!

Michelle said:
"Independent Provider Jimmy Lee Denson has provided consistent, reliable Non-Medical Transportation (NMT) for individual Joseph Dienger for several years now. This past Sunday, Jimmy made sure Joe got to and from his job at West Chester Hospital during the snowstorm. Joe’s Supervisor even said to Joe when he arrived at work, 'I knew you would be here!' Joe is also very responsible and would probably have walked to work if he had to. He didn’t have to, though, because Jimmy safely got him there!"

Thank you so much, Jimmy, for going above and beyond to get Joseph to work despite the weather conditions! We are so lucky to have such dedicated providers in Butler County!
