To our loyal customers,
It is with bittersweet feelings, that I am announcing the closure of Hampton Liggett Drugs after 54 years, the last 35 of which, I have been an owner. All your pharmacy records have been moved to Rite Aid, located at 50 East Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays. As I will be eligible to start Medicare on my next birthday, I felt that the time was rapidly approaching for me to start the next phase of my life. It was my hope to keep Hampton Liggett Drugs independent, but these are extremely difficult times for privately owned pharmacies and I needed to make sure that you would be taken care of by a company that is on stable footing and well equipped to deal with today's challenges. I feel that Rite Aid can fulfill my hopes in that regard.
There are way too many people to thank individually, so I will break it down into groups. First, to my family, led by my wife, Judy, and my kids, who have been so supportive and understanding, knowing that I could not always physically be there for every event. Second, I would like to thank my staff, former and present, including James and Maureen and my former partner and mentor, Mark Janis. Many have moved on to successful careers and some have been with me for my entire time at Liggetts. Those who have stayed to the end, I can not thank you enough for your loyalty. Lastly, but certainly just as important, you, our customers. When I started 35 years ago, you immediately made me feel welcome. It has been my pleasure to have gotten to know so many of you, not just professionally, but more importantly, on a personal level. I feel we have served the community well and you have certainly reciprocated. I hope that in the future, our paths may cross again, perhaps just in passing or on a golf course.
Stay healthy,
Mark Hertz
p.s. The above had been written a few days before the actual closing. Since then, the outpouring of support has been incredible and something I will never forget. For the few who expressed disappointment, I get it. If it was up to me, I would have given everybody some notice, but contractually, I didn't have the option. I hope you understand.
