Happy World Read Aloud Day from all of us at Collier Literacy!!
From living rooms, classrooms, and everywhere in between: stories bring us together. Reading aloud is about connection, not perfection, and it matters long after a child can read on their own. Sometimes stories just sound better when they’re shared.

💬 Let’s celebrate National Thesaurus Day! Explore words big and small and discover new ways to say them! From ‘happy’ to ‘delighted,’ let’s make today a day for synonyms.

It might seem like a silly thing to celebrate, but a day that helps build love for language and vocabulary is something we can absolutely get behind! We love to look deeper into how words work and explore fun new ways to express ourselves! We are sharing some fun books to read, absorb or experience and family activities that can work today or any day!

🌟 Want to support your new reader? Start with decodable books!🌟
These books are intentionally designed with words that match the phonics skills kids learn first (think: cat, map, sip, hop). Beginning readers are learning that letters represent sounds that they can decode to unlock the meaning of words. Early decodable books patterns allow kids to practice sounding out words instead of guessing. The result? More confidence, stronger skills, and joyful “I can read this!” moments.

Some great first decodable book series are:
📖 Laugh-a-Lot Phonics: Short Vowels
📖 Bob Books Set 1: Beginning Readers
📖 Phonic Books Dandelion World Stages 1-7
📖 Nonfiction Phonics Readers Set 1

Parents: Feeling like your student is a little past these first series but could still benefit from the decodable books format? Just ask us for suggestions at the right level!

We’re back and we’re reflecting on the last year.

Some quick stats to share:
Appointments: 1,902, Students: 96, Collier Literacy Instructors: 5, Parent Consultations: 80, Assessments: 38

What the stats can never fully represent? Our appreciation for all the families who share their wonderful children with us. Our dedication to continue learning and improving our own skills. Our excitement when a new skill is unlocked for a child.

Here’s to another year of exciting development for our students and our program!!

Beth has been with us from almost the beginning and we are grateful for her everyday! She has a talent for making learning fun and engaging through multi sensory activities and games that encourage students to participate.

Before Collier Literacy, Beth's education includes a Ed.S. Degree in Reading from Gordon College, M.Ed. Degree in Reading and Language Acquisition from UMass Lowell, and a B.S. Degree in Early Childhood Education from Salem State University. She taught for 12 years as a classroom teacher in kindergarten, first, and second grade. She then taught as a title one reading and specialized reading teacher for 4 years, and has worked as as a special education inclusion teacher for 3 years.

We love having her on our team where she enjoys making an impact on students lives and watching them grow. Thank you Beth!

Help make the winter season a little easier and brighter for a local family. This December, we are excited to host a Giving Tree in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul of Hampton. We are collecting food and clothing items for their Food Pantry and Clothes Closet, and every donation makes a meaningful difference! The tree in our lobby has tags with lists of their highest-need items.

If your family would like to participate, simply:
    •    Choose a tag from the tree.
    •    Bring the donation to the Collier Literacy office (unwrapped, please).
    •    Return all items by December 23rd.

Thank you for helping support local families this season!

At Collier Literacy & Learning, connections with our students are at the heart of everything we do. This Thanksgiving, we’re especially thankful for our amazing team and families who helped bring some creativity, joy and color to the waiting room. Our Thanksgiving turkey is full! To the children (and some of their grown-ups) who decorated a feather: Thank You!

We’re so grateful for the families who share their hearts and time with us every day. Your support makes our work possible. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃📖
