Asking for help is often framed as a deficit in our culture, but psychologically and practically, it is a hallmark of high-functioning individuals and effective leaders.

Here is why shifting this perspective is essential:
1. It Demonstrates High Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
Recognizing your own limitations is a sophisticated form of self-awareness. Instead of "faking it" or hitting a wall, you accurately assess your resources (time, knowledge, or energy) and take the most logical step to move forward. This is a sign of maturity, not incompetence.
2. It Requires "Badass" Vulnerability
As researcher Brené Brown famously notes, you cannot have courage without vulnerability. Admitting you don't have all the answers is an act of bravery because it requires you to "show up and be seen" without the armor of perfection.
3. It Deepens Relationships through Reciprocity
Human beings are neurobiologically wired for connection. When you ask someone for help:
You build trust: It signals that you value their expertise or presence.
You create a "Helper’s High": Giving help releases oxytocin and dopamine in the person assisting you. By asking, you are actually giving them an opportunity to feel needed and valued.
4. It Is a Strategy of High Achievers
The Dunning-Kruger effect shows that people with lower skills often overestimate their abilities, while experts are more likely to doubt themselves and seek outside input. High achievers view "help" as a tool for efficiency—they would rather get a task done correctly in 30 minutes with assistance than struggle alone for three hours.
5. It Prevents Burnout
Asking for help is a self-preservation mechanism. It allows you to delegate or share emotional burdens, ensuring that you can stay in the game for the long haul rather than collapsing under the weight of "doing it all."

In this room, men are investing in themselves: learning, reflecting, writing, and choosing a different path forward. Programs like this don’t just teach skills — they restore dignity, spark hope, and open doors that many believed were permanently closed.

Every person here is more than their past. They are students, fathers, brothers, leaders in the making. They are proof that when we provide opportunity, structure, and belief, growth follows.

This is what rehabilitation looks like.
This is what second chances look like.
This is why the work matters.

Empowering people. Strengthening communities. Changing futures.

We’re proud to announce that CATCH Maryland has officially partnered with the University of Maryland Medical Center to create life-changing opportunities for our formerly incarcerated men.
Through this partnership, participants in our program will have the opportunity to volunteer at UMMC, gain hands-on experience in a professional healthcare environment, and build pathways toward long-term careers upon completing their volunteer service.
At CATCH Maryland, we believe that second chances build stronger communities. By connecting our participants with meaningful work in healthcare, we’re not only transforming individual lives — we’re strengthening the fabric of Maryland’s workforce and community care.
A huge thank you to the University of Maryland Medical Center team for opening their doors and hearts to this critical mission. Together, we’re proving that redemption, service, and opportunity go hand in hand.
Kudos to our team for making this happen! Eric Elston, Ed.D., and Marsha Briley, OWDS-I, GCDF. Special thanks to Del. Gary Simmons for supporting the vision and program!

Today, I celebrate Elijah’s journey as he embarked on a new chapter, returning to his community, his son, and establishing his own landscaping business. Witnessing transformation unfold as we cultivate spaces for healing is truly fulfilling. My life’s mission revolves around nurturing and empowering individuals to foster a sense of family and support. Each step taken is a testament to the impact of rebuilding lives, one person at a time. 💭If you believe everyone deserves a second chance, drop a like,👍🏾,❤️ or comment below.

A huge thank you to Campbell’s Chapel AME Church for inviting me to speak on Men’s Day. 🙏🏽

It was a privilege to stand among such strong men of faith and fellowship. Grateful for the warm welcome, the powerful worship, and the opportunity to share a word with the congregation.
