Anger gets a bad reputation. But anger is often a secondary emotion. That means it’s usually protecting something deeper.

Under anger, we often see:
Hurt
Rejection
Fear
Shame
Grief
Feeling unheard or unimportant

Anger feels powerful. Vulnerability doesn’t.
So our brains choose anger because it feels safer than admitting, “That really hurt me.”

When someone snaps, shuts down, or reacts strongly, it may not be because they’re “an angry person.” It may be because something tender just got touched.

This doesn’t mean harmful behavior is excused. We are still responsible for how we express our emotions.
But understanding anger differently can change everything — in our relationships and within ourselves.

Instead of asking:
“Why am I so angry?”

Try asking:
What did I feel right before this?
What am I protecting?
Where do I feel this in my body?
What do I actually need right now?

When we get curious about our anger instead of judging it, we often find a softer emotion underneath that’s asking for care.

Anger isn’t the enemy. Sometimes it’s the bodyguard for a wound that hasn’t been tended to yet.
