❤️Information Friday❤️
Happy Info Friday! Let's dive into heartworms and what they're all about. 🐶🔬
What is it?
Heartworm disease comes from the parasite called Dirofilaria immitis. This is a fancy name for a large worm that infests the heart and as more and more clog the heart it decreases blood flow which leads to heart failure.
How does your pet contract heartworm?
Pets get heartworm from mosquitoes that have taken blood from an infected carrier (usually other infected dogs, wolves, foxes or coyotes). They then carry the young immature worms to a new host and bite them which causes the worms to move to a new host. The worms then migrate into the blood stream and make their way to the heart.
How do we prevent it/ see signs and symptoms?
While this disease is most common in dogs, cats and other small animals can also get heartworms. To help prevent that they need to be started on a heartworm preventative and stay on it year round. Before a pet can get started on meds they first need to be tested to make sure they are heartworm negative. To do this you vet needs to get a couple drops of blood and run a quick test. Some signs and symptoms can be a cough, lethargy, or a sudden collapse.
Be sure to get your pet in to get tested for heartworm and get started on a preventative!
