Happy Info Friday! Let's dive into heartworms and what they're all about. 🐶🔬

What is it?

Heartworm disease comes from the parasite called Dirofilaria immitis. This is a fancy name for a large worm that infests the heart and as more and more clog the heart it decreases blood flow which leads to heart failure.

How does your pet contract heartworm?

Pets get heartworm from mosquitoes that have taken blood from an infected carrier (usually other infected dogs, wolves, foxes or coyotes). They then carry the young immature worms to a new host and bite them which causes the worms to move to a new host. The worms then migrate into the blood stream and make their way to the heart.

How do we prevent it/ see signs and symptoms?

While this disease is most common in dogs, cats and other small animals can also get heartworms. To help prevent that they need to be started on a heartworm preventative and stay on it year round. Before a pet can get started on meds they first need to be tested to make sure they are heartworm negative. To do this you vet needs to get a couple drops of blood and run a quick test. Some signs and symptoms can be a cough, lethargy, or a sudden collapse.

Be sure to get your pet in to get tested for heartworm and get started on a preventative!

*Update. She has been adopted and is going to a new home!

This sweet dog is available for adoption. She is a spayed female about 5-6 years old. We believe she is a heeler or heeler cross that weighs about 35-40lbs. She is a timid dog and would do best in a home where she can relax. If you have any questions please call the clinic as we do not check our Facebook messages.

Info Friday!

Today's topic is going to be about catching urine samples and the best way to collect them.

First off why would we need to collect a urine sample?
Majority of the time we collect urine samples because of a health problem, but we can collect them for just a routine check up. A urine analysis can help with detection of UTI's, blood in the urine, or even detection of diabetes in pets.

How should we go about collecting the sample?
We always recommend getting a new clean container. Whether that be some tupperware, a pie tin or a bowl. Using a container that isn't clean can tamper with our results when running the urinalysis. Once you have collected the sample it is important to get it to your vet as soon as possible. If you aren't able to take it to them right away be sure to store it in your fridge.

Helpful tip:
Putting your collection container on a pole or stick can help with nervous dogs who don't stand still.

❓️Did you know...❓️

Did you know that the rabies vaccine is time sensitive? What does this mean exactly? Well a rabies vaccine can come in 2 forms. There is a 1 year rabies and a 3 year rabies. Here's where it gets a little confusing. The only way to get a three year rabies is based on if you got your pet vaccinated before or on the due date of the previous rabies vaccine.

Let's create a scenario.

A client brings in their pet for their annual vaccines. Let's say the date is 1/3/26 when the rabies vaccine was given. This vaccine would be considered a 1 year rabies. Now in order to get a 3 year rabies you would need to come back into get the pet vaccinated before or on 1/3/27.

We hope this was informative and if you have any questions about this contact your local vet clinic.
