Most people know that high blood pressure, also known as hypertension can be bad for your health but most don't know that it can also affect your feet. Hypertension is often related to atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque in blood vessels. This condition can also lead to decreased circulation and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). People with decreased circulation in their legs and feet may develop ulcerations (open wounds on the skin) that can lead to amputations. One of the most common conditions affecting feet and ankles is arthritis. It is a disabling and occasionally crippling disease that afflicts almost 40 million Americans. In some forms, it appears to have hereditary tendencies. While the prevalence of arthritis increases with age, all people from infancy to middle age are potential victims. People over 50 are most prone to arthritis.

Arthritic feet can result in loss of mobility and independence, but early diagnosis and proper medical care can help significantly. Some fun winter activities can be hard on your feet - like skiing and snowboarding. Here are some tips for keeping your feet healthy while enjoying these cold weather activities:

1. Never ski or snowboard in footwear other than ski boots specifically designed for that purpose.
2. Make sure your boots fit properly; you should be able to wiggle your toes, but the boots should immobilize the heel, instep, and ball of your foot.
3. You can use orthotics (support devices that go inside shoes) to help control the foot's movement inside ski boots or ice skates.

Read more about taking care of your feet during winter activities at https://www.apma.org/Patients/HealthyFeetTips.cfm?ItemNumber=11069 and schedule an appointment with Procare Podiatry if you need help!

A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), a physician and surgeon who treats the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. Since feet are complex anatomical structures, all-in-one stabilizers, shock absorbers, and propulsion engines that are instrumental to overall health and well-being it is important to entrust them to an expert's care.
