While protein is getting a lot of attention, it’s important not to overlook fiber. Dietary fiber helps manage blood sugar, supports digestive health and helps you feel full.

Fiber isn’t just found in green, leafy vegetables. You can get it from a variety of foods, including:

Legumes: Peas, lentils and beans can be added to soups, dips and spreads.

Whole grains: Whole wheat pasta, quinoa and brown rice are good sources. Look for “whole grain flour” as the first ingredient on the label.

Fruits, nuts and seeds: A sliced apple makes a quick snack, and a handful of almonds can keep you fueled during a hike.

Planning meals with fiber in mind can help you stay satisfied between meals and support a balanced diet.

March is National Nutrition Month — a time for checking in on our health and habits related to food. When it comes to eating healthful foods, discussions are often centered around what’s on the plate. But the planning you do around mealtime can make all the difference.

Here are three ways you can choose more nutritious options before mealtime:

Meal prep: As you reach the final days before a grocery run, write down four to six meal ideas for the upcoming week. This helps organize your thoughts and allows you to plan meals ahead of time. It can also help you try new cuisines and recipes or incorporate a particular nutrient you’re trying to get more of.

Keep a grocery list: Whether it’s on a piece of paper or in your phone, a list can help keep you on track. Following a grocery list means you’re less likely to make impulse purchases — less emotion, more strategy.

Do your dishes each night: The more ready your cooking area is, the more likely you are to cook. Keeping your kitchen ready for use makes it less likely that you’ll order takeout.

Healthful eating is more than putting vegetables on the plate; it’s about embracing the process in and out of the kitchen. By planning ahead, you’re more likely to meet your nutrition goals.

Preparing for your first colonoscopy? It’s normal to have questions — especially about the preparation process. At UP Health System, we’re here to help you feel informed and confident every step of the way.

In the 24 to 48 hours before your procedure, your provider will typically recommend a clear liquid diet and prescribe medication to help prepare your digestive system. This step is essential, as it allows your physician to obtain the clearest, most accurate view during the exam. Following your instructions carefully plays an important role in the effectiveness of your screening.

After your colonoscopy, you will need someone to drive you home due to the sedation used during the procedure.

Colonoscopy is an important preventive screening tool that can detect concerns early, when they are most treatable. To learn more about your health risks and preventive care options, take our free colon health risk assessment at www.UPHealthSystem.com.
