Blessing Health System rolled out the red, white and blue carpet for its team of 400 volunteers for its annual appreciation event celebrating National Volunteer Week.

Blessing’s 400 active volunteers contributed more than 52,400 hours last year in a variety of roles across the health system. That comes to a value of nearly $1.7 million of time and talent donated by volunteers to help fulfill the Blessing mission of “Improving the Health of our Communities.”

“We have a place for everyone. Whatever your personality type, whatever your interests, we have countless opportunities for volunteers. I really feel passionate about helping people find their purpose, something that makes them feel fulfilled in life,” Christy Woodward, director, Volunteer Services at Blessing.

DID YOU KNOW?!💙💚

• Over 100,000 people in the US are in need of an organ transplant. Every 10 minutes a new person joins the list. 17 people die everyday while waiting for a life saving organ.

• You can give no greater gift than the gift of life. One person can save and improve more than 75 lives through organ, eye and tissue donation. By registering to become a donor, you can help give that gift.

• To ensure that your decision to donate is honored, you can register your legal decision to be a donor in a confidential donor registry. Each state maintains a registry, in addition to a national registry that is managed by Donate Life America. After you register, if you change your mind for any reason, you can contact the registry where you registered to ask that your name is removed.

• Transplantation provides hope to thousands of people with organ failure. In addition, transplanted tissue saves lives and offers hundreds of thousands of people active and renewed lives. But transplantation requires the commitment of organ and tissue donors, and the need for donors is much greater than the number of people who actually donate.

• There is no cost to the donor’s family or estate. Federally designated organ procurement organizations such as Gift of Hope are highly regulated, and cover all costs associated with the donation. Organ and tissue donation is a gift. It is illegal in the United States to buy or sell organs or tissue.

• The vast majority of religious and faith-based traditions support donation as the highest gesture of humanitarianism and final act of love and generosity to others. Many have passed resolutions and adopted positions that encourage people to seriously consider donation and plan accordingly.

NO-COST CHOLESTEROL AND WELLNESS SCREENING - HAPPENING THIS WEEK!

Reserve your spot now for Thursday, April 23rd at the MJB Conference Room at Blessing Health Hannibal. This screening includes: Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, fasting glucose, blood pressure, body composition and, for those who qualify, an A1C screening.

Cholesterol screening requires a 12-hour fast for all participants and measures total cholesterol, HDL, LDL triglycerides, fasting glucose, blood pressure, body composition, and for those that qualify, an A1C screening. (A history of diabetes/pre-diabetes, or elevated fasting glucose is required for the A1C screening.)

In honor of Donate Life Month, we asked a recipient what she might say if she got the chance to send her donor family a letter. We call this the Legacy Letter, because one person's decision to be an organ donor became someone else’s forever.

Gretchen Damotte, a kidney recipient, tells her story and continues her second chance at life, determined to leave a legacy that her donor would be proud of.

Who could pass up a FREE health screening?!😱

There is not much time left to get signed up for our No-Cost Community Cholesterol & Wellness Screening. This screening includes: Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, fasting glucose, blood pressure, body composition, and, for those who qualify, an A1C screening.

The screening takes place at the MJB Conference Room at Blessing Health Hannibal on Thursday, April 23. You can register for any available seat in the 15-minute time slots from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m.

Hannibal Clinic is a physician directed corporation whose mission is to support and assist its physicians and other healthcare providers in the practice of medicine founded upon excellence, compassion, honesty and integrity.

Hannibal Clinic was founded in 1957 by four visionary Physicians, and has grown to the corporation it is today- with over 50 Physicians practicing in 20 specialties. In 2018 Hannibal Clinic merged with Blessing Health System with the goal to better serve the community and patients of the area.
