Marion County Services

Marion County Services We provide activities, grants, case management, activities, and payee services for the developmentally disabled citizens in Marion County.

We have public board meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in our office. Our Mission:
To Increase Choice, Respect, Ability, and Involvement for the Developmentally Disabled Citizens of Marion County. Our Philosophy
“Filling the gaps in service to meet the needs of people with disabilities”
Our primary goal is to find innovative ways to support the families and bolster the independence of individuals with disabilities. Marion County Services for the Developmentally Disabled has been serving individuals and their families in our local community for over 25 years. Throughout our years of service, we’ve exponentially grown through the demands for needs right here in our own county. Just ask a few of our employees and they’ll tell you exactly how we’re continuing to find innovative health and living support options which foster greater independence. Marion County Services addresses real mental health and wellness needs through a host of time-tested, specialized tools. We provide quality, one-on-one time tailoring a working plan for addressing real support and health needs. MCSDD strives to seamlessly integrate individuals with developmental disabilities into our community. Providing services is one thing, and it is vital, but most importantly, MCSDD encourages fostering self-advocacy: we don’t just give our individuals the proverbial fish for life- we strive to equip them with the tools they need for successfully and catching their own with confidence, too. Marion County Services also helps individuals and their families identify, apply for and obtain health and wellness-based grants which further enable their own self-advocacy and quality of life. Our citizens and neighbors who we enable often need adaptive equipment, help with costs for medical travel so they can obtain the regular, quality help they need, and assistance with every-day living – just to name a few. This is primarily where grant funding we receive is specifically allocated for. Marion County Services for the Developmentally Disabled translates into real, professional enabling of real individuals in our community to continue to receive the quality help they need- this means ensuring quality of life for our neighbors- funds for healthy and fulfilling lives- and the fulfillment of the continuing promise towards tangible equality for every developmentally disabled citizen of Marion County. March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. I would love to have responses from everyone - family members, friends, professionals, and individuals with developmental disabilities themselves.

How has developmental disabilities impacted your life for the better? What has it taught you about life, joy, patience, or strength?

I will go first. 18 years ago, this past January I began working at MCSDD. Working with individuals have taught me so much. How to love unconditionally, give my all (even when I don't want to) and to never give up. I have learned this by the individual's examples.

The position of Community Coordinator has given so much joy to my life. I love being with the individuals and having fun with them. I love Special Olympics and watching my athletes give their best. I love having prom and dances. It's so much fun to see the individuals, staff and family members having a good time. I even enjoy having karaoke nights, even though I usually end up leaving with a headache. It's worth it though, to see those who are non-verbal get up, grab that microphone and sing their heart out. I definitely have the best job in the world.

Personally, I have been impacted by autism. I have three sons who have autism and other developmental disabilities. My adult daughter is now working in the developmental disabilities field and my adult son have volunteered for Special Olympics. I guess you can say I see both sides of things. The passion of those who work in the field and the family that lives with it 24/7. Some days are hard, some days even harder, but the good and great days make up for it.
