Staff spotlight of the month, part 2! And it’s a double feature! 👯‍♀️

May is Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, so what better time to celebrate Yuri and Emi!

Yuri has been apart of the DC Sports Med staff for 8 years now. She currently works with and programs.

Emi has been with DCSM for 2 years, and works primarily with and programs.

As you can tell both love the outdoors and both are patient with the rest of the sports med staff when they want to learn Japanese words and culture.

May 6th marks the start of National Nurses Week 2021. The week ends on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a British nurse that is commonly known as the founder of modern nursing for the advancements she made in hygienic practices during the Crimean War.
Nurses make up the highest percentage of the US healthcare workforce and have worked tirelessly through the COVID-19 pandemic. You can show your appreciation by donating to a nursing non-profit, sending a gift to your local nurses, or simply sharing your appreciation on social media with the hashtag

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 😮

Mental health is becoming less and less taboo, but it’s still a topic some avoid. There are millions of people that are living with mental illness. Only about 30% of those people seek help. Among athletes, only 10% seek help. You are not alone. While it may seem scary, you have an abundance of people that are here for you: coaches, teammates, athletic trainers, strength coaches etc.

The more we talk about mental health, the more we fight the stigma and the stronger we get.

We’re a little late to the party here but April is Alcohol Awareness Month. And to “celebrate” we want to explain some effects of alcohol can have on you, not only as a person, but as a student athlete!

🍺 Alcohol can decrease strength output in your skeletal muscles. Essentially making you weaker no matter how much you lift or practice.
🥂 Alcohol is a peripheral vasodilator. This means it directly effect your ability to be and stay hydrated. This happens because alcohol increases fluid loss that is crucial to hydration.
🍷Alcohol reduces muscle glycogen uptake. Meaning you are directly reducing your muscles capability to properly recover. Which all know how important recovery is!
🍻Alcohol does not discriminate. It’s decreases performance for anaerobic and aerobic based athletes. So it doesn’t matter if you’re power based, endurance based, or both. Alcohol will decrease your ability to perform at your best.

So rethink what and how much you’re drinking!

HUGE shout out to our office manager Tracy Purcell! Tracy started at Dartmouth in a traditional AT role but found that she wanted something that fit her family better. She pivoted to our office manger role in 2014 and has been keeping us in-line ever since! Because she’s an athletic trainer she understands the demands we have as a department and help us stay afloat on a daily basis, going above and beyond every day. Thanks Tracy!

Dartmouth College has officially eased the restrictions recently put in place following the increase of COVID-19 cases in the community. Most facilities on campus have reopened to eligible students and staff, though common spaces and kitchens in residence halls will remain closed.

This increase in cases has shown that we aren’t quite out of the woods yet. Please continue to mask everywhere you go and maintain 6 feet of physical distance in all directions, even if you have been vaccinated.

Follow the link for the CDC recommendations for fully vaccinated individuals.
