Did you know oral ties in infants can impact so much more than just the mouth? When we think about tongue ties and lip ties, most people focus on feeding or speech, but the body is deeply connected, and these restrictions can influence multiple “floors” of the body:
✨ Oral Floor
Where it begins. Ties can limit tongue and lip movement, affecting latch, sucking, swallowing, and overall feeding efficiency.
✨ Cranial Floor
The tongue has direct connections into the skull and neck. Restrictions can create tension patterns that may influence head shape, jaw development, and how the nervous system processes and regulates.
✨ Diaphragm (Breathing Floor)
The tongue and diaphragm are closely connected. When tongue mobility is limited, babies may develop shallow or compensatory breathing patterns instead of deep, efficient breaths.
✨ Pelvic Floor
The diaphragm and pelvic floor work together as a pressure system. If breathing is altered, the pelvic floor often compensates. Even in infants affecting core stability, digestion, and overall regulation.
🧠 Why a team approach matters:
No single provider can address all aspects of oral ties, that’s why I love collaborating with a trusted team 💛
👶 Lactation Consultants help support feeding, latch, and positioning so baby can nourish and grow effectively.
🦷 Dentists (especially those trained in oral ties) evaluate and perform releases when necessary to improve function.
👅 Myofunctional Therapists guide proper oral muscle function, helping babies (and growing kiddos) learn how to use their tongue, lips, and airway correctly.
✨ My role as a chiropractor is to support the nervous system and help release tension patterns throughout the body so babies can adapt, regulate, and function at their best.
It truly takes a village, and when we all work together, we create the best outcomes for our littlest patients 🤍
