Just days after giving birth to her son Micah in 2010, Brittany couldn't catch her breath. Doctors diagnosed her with peripartum cardiomyopathy...a rare pregnancy-related heart condition that would change everything.
Over the next several years, her heart continued to weaken. Dizzy spells. An implantable defibrillator. Six shocks in four years.
By 2015, she was in full heart failure and placed on the transplant waiting list, where she would spend nine months in the hospital and earning her Master's degree from her hospital bed while waiting for a miracle.
That miracle came in January 2018 when she received the call that a matching donor heart was available.
But life had more in store. Soon after her transplant, Brittany was diagnosed with Stage IV lymphoma. She fought through chemo and radiation, and by early 2022, she was declared cancer-free.
Then in December 2023, her son Micah (just 13 years old) was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and a rare genetic disease called Danon disease. He was placed on the transplant list, too.
Today, Brittany uses her journey to advocate for organ donation, and Micah has launched a peer-support network for teens navigating transplant and chronic illness.
One family. Two transplant journeys. Proof that saying YES creates ripples of hope for generations.
