Tip O' Texas Genealogical Society, Harlingen, Texas To promote interest...in genealogical research in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

The Tip O' Texas Genealogical Society [TOTGS] came into being in February 1962 when eight ladies met to form a group with the goal of exploring their roots back to pre-revolutionary times. At first they assessed themselves $1 in dues and were able to purchase a Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Index that became the nucleus of the genealogical collection in the Harlingen Public Library. From that modest beginning, resources available to present-day genealogists have grown to include several thousand volumes of varying sizes and topics, including guides, local histories, "how-to" books, documents from all states, several hundred state and national quarterlies as well as resources from many nations representing all ethnic groups. In 2008 a Hispanic Genealogy Group was formed that became a separate society in 2010. TOTGS members present programs and workshops to sister societies, schools, scout groups, civic clubs, RV parks and senior citizen organizations. Workshops (hands-on) are presented as well as special programs on using the Internet and other sources for genealogy research.

This re: Genealogy day:
Good afternoon,
I trust this email finds you well. We would like to express our gratitude for your organization’s participation in the Genealogy Network of Texas State-wide Event held on Friday, October 20th. We hope that your local event was well received and met expectations.
We are thrilled to share that based on the statistics received the event was a resounding success, drawing a remarkable total of 4498 views across all participating locations (both virtually as well as in-person). Each library and genealogical society’s participation played an important role in making this event a memorable and educational experience for family historians across Texas and beyond.
A special note of appreciation goes out to our esteemed speakers, whose expertise and engaging presentations undoubtedly contributed to the event's success. Their passion for genealogy was evident, and we received numerous positive comments from attendees expressing their gratitude for the insightful discussions.
Looking ahead, we are excited to announce the date for next year's Genealogy Event. Please mark your calendars for Friday, October 18, 2024. This event is held on the third Friday in October each year. We will be sending out registration information in the spring. We hope to continue to build upon the success of this year's event and continue fostering a sense of community and learning for individuals researching their family history.
We would also like to thank our event co-sponsors: the Central Texas Genealogical Society and the Texas State Genealogical Society. The time and energy volunteers from these organizations invest into this event every year is crucial and this event would not be what it is without them. And thank you to the Texas Research Ramblers for sponsoring one of the speakers this year. Your contribution was invaluable.
Once again, thank you for hosting this event in your area. Your dedication and commitment to making educational opportunities for genealogists is what makes events like this possible. We look forward to collaborating with you again in the future and creating more opportunities for our community to connect and explore their roots.
If you have any feedback or suggestions for improvement, please feel free to share them with us. Your input is appreciated as we strive to make each event better than the last.

10:25 AM – 11:15 AM Linking the Generations with Court and Land Records
Judy Russell, JD, CG, CGL, The Legal Genealogist Sponsored by the Texas Research Ramblers Genealogical Society
It’s the single biggest issue genealogists face: how do we connect one generation to the next with reliable evidence?
Vital records are excellent documentation, but they often don’t exist for the time and place we’re researching. We must
make sure we’re not simply putting people into family lines because they share the same names. Using court and land
records, we can often find the evidence needed to link the generations accurately.
11:25 AM – 12:15 PM Tame the Chaos Tiger: Organize Your Records and Research
Susan Ball, President TxSGS
How many times are the solutions to our brick walls found in records we already have? This presentation starts with
taming the physical chaos caused by lack of organization and continues with taming the research chaos caused by poorly
defined and overlooked research. Explore templates for organizational tools to help organize information and form a
research plan.
12:50 PM – 1:40 PM Uncover Your Family’s Story Using the Periodical Source Index (PERSI)
Elizabeth Hodges, MA, MSLIS, Senior Librarian in the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center

tool in your family history tool box!
1:50 PM – 2:40 PM Placing Your DNA Matches on Your Tree
Ryan Russell, Genetic Genealogist, Open Door Genetics
When you take a DNA test, you'll receive a match list of mostly strangers. Who are these people, and how are you
connected? This session discusses strategies for identifying your DNA matches and determining your common ancestors.
Whether your goal is to collect more information about your ancestors or break through brick walls on your tree, gaining
a better understanding of your DNA matches can lead to new discoveries.
2:50 PM – 3:40 PM Secrets to Successful Writing & Publishing
Angela Breidenbach, Executive Director of the International Institute of Genealogical Studies

Dedication Martha Washington’s Bronze Statue

McAllen, TX – Veterans War Memorial of Texas – DAR Plaza of Liberty located 29th Street and Col. Plummer Drive

June 13, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. DAR Plaza of Liberty located in Veterans War Memorial of Texas, 29th Street and Col. Plummer Drive.

Original plans for the Memorial included the Statue of Martha Washington, patriot in the American Revolution. Martha married George Washington when she was 27. The rest is history as she stood by his side throughout as wife, Chief confidant, enduring 5 army winter camps caring for wounded soldiers and served as Official Secretary for George plus provided financial aid for the Revolutionary War.

The statue was erected through donations from several DAR members and was created by Rio Grande Valley Sculptor, Douglas Clark. This bronze is of a young Martha. It is a masterpiece.

Col. Frank Plummer, President Veterans Memorial Foundation of Texas, commented, “the DAR goals to preserve history, promote patriotism and education are truly achieved in the Plaza of Liberty with the walls of history and statues. They reflect the spirit, sacrifice and courage in defending the hard earned gift of freedom so cherished by the American people.”

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation’s children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With 185,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations. To learn more about the work of today’s DAR, visit www.DAR.org. For more information, please contact Cheyanne Zink at 956-565-6325

The Daughters of the American Revolution is an organization with a deeply rich history while also being truly relevant in today’s world. More than 930,000 women have joined the organization since it was founded close to 125 years ago.
