Not all "Nits" are created equal! 🔍🥚 If you’re DIY-ing a lice check at home, you might be seeing different things in the hair. Knowing the difference between a hatched nit and an unhatched egg is the key to knowing if you have an active problem!
1. The Unhatched Egg (The "Live" One) 🟤
Color: Usually brownish, tan, or coffee-colored. It looks dark because the baby louse is still inside!
Location: Found very close to the scalp (within 1/4 inch). They need the heat from your head to stay alive.
The "Glue": These are cemented to the hair strand. If you can blow it away or flick it off easily, it’s just dandruff!
2. The Hatched Nit (The "Empty Shell") ⚪
Color: Clear, white, or translucent. Once the bug hatches, the shell stays glued to the hair.
Location: As the hair grows, these "empty cases" move further away from the scalp.
The Trap: Seeing white shells doesn't always mean the lice are gone—it usually means they’ve already hatched and are currently crawling around!
The Bottom Line:
If you see dark teardrop-shaped beauties glued near the scalp, you have an active infestation that needs professional treatment ASAP.
