What is responsive breastfeeding? How does it benefit you, mama?

Responsive breastfeeding is when you breastfeed according to your baby's cues and your own desires. By feeding responsively, you recognize the role nursing plays not just in nutrition, but also in developing love and comfort between parent & child. It also promotes prolactin and sends relaxing hormones throughout the mother.

Don't trust the pump! While knowing how much milk you're pumping can be a useful metric, pumping doesn't tell the full story. Babies are often more efficient at removing milk, and some people don't respond to pumps at all.

If you're struggling to pump, try adding breast compressions, or even just hand expressing. You may see better results!

One of the most important and successful ways to start your breastfeeding journey is with the Golden Hour. This is the first hour after birth, in which your baby is placed directly on your chest/stomach.

During this hour, the contact between you and your baby helps decrease adrenaline, increase the amount of important breastfeeding & bonding hormones, and lets your baby start the learning process of how to attach for feeding. By letting your baby explore and familiarize yourself with you, bonding begins early and the breastfeeding success rate goes up significantly.

Talk to your doctor about the Golden Hour, and your hospital's policy around it!

You can still breastfeed, even after a c-section! Here are some tips to make the transition into breastfeeding a little easier. If you're planning on breastfeeding, but will be getting a c-section, make sure you speak to your doctor ahead of time so you can discuss what steps to take to make sure you're being set up for success.
