On the move again! Regional Liaison Kayla Combs visited Clay County Hospital who converted to a Rural Emergency Hospital in 2025.

During her visit, Kayla met with the CEO, CFO, and department leaders to listen, answer questions, and provide guidance on what to expect through the transition. These conversations helped identify the resources we can provide to support the hospital’s staff and leadership during this critical time.

Thank you to Clay County Hospital for the warm welcome. Through times of change, rural hospitals receive the support and practical tools needed to maintain high-quality health care for their communities.

We are on the move again! Regional Liaison Kayla Combs visited Russell Medical Center in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, as part of the Appalachian Region Healthcare Technical Assistance Center (ARH-TAC) program.

The visit focused on planning upcoming support to help the hospital prepare for the road ahead. These conversations ensure we deliver resources that truly meet the unique needs of rural hospitals and their communities, bringing care where it’s needed most.

We are proud to partner with hospitals like Russell Medical Center to strengthen rural health care through collaboration and ongoing support.

Regional Liaison Ken Harman attended the Kansas Hospital Association Annual Convention in Wichita, KS. The event brought together health care leaders from across the state to connect, learn, and share insights on improving health care for rural America.

Ken connected with hospitals to discuss the Regional Emergency Hospital (REH) program and how we can continue supporting rural facilities through this transition.

We are proud to share through a $1.17M supplemental award from the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy in partnership with the Northern Border Regional Commission, we supported seven innovative community-driven rural-health projects across ME, NH, NY & VT during a one-year period through 2023-24.

These efforts advanced work in Opioid Use Disorder, Leadership Development, Food Insecurity, Pediatric Oral Health, Mobile Integrated Care, Peer Support in Behavioral Health & Substance Use Disorder, and Primary Care Access.

Congratulations to Kevin O’Brien!

Kevin O’Brien, CEO/CFO of Harper County Community Hospital in Buffalo, Oklahoma, was honored as the Rural Health Leader of the Year for 2025 by the Rural Health Association of Oklahoma (RHAO).

The award was presented at the RHAO Awards Reception celebrating Kevin’s outstanding leadership and dedication to advancing rural healthcare in Oklahoma.

Kevin shared with us:

We proudly hosted the Next Generation Rural Health Sustainability Summit, continuing our mission to strengthen and sustain rural healthcare.

Together with rural healthcare leaders and partner organizations, we reviewed our four new workgroups launched in 2025: Alternative Payment, Transformation Planning, Quality Development Programming, and Infrastructure Planning.

By guiding these collaborative efforts, we are ensuring rural providers have the tools and support they need to deliver high‑quality care to their residents.
