Celebrating teamwork at Washington County Detention Center—thank you Misty Butler, LPN; Kelly Praizner, LPN; Tiffany White, LPN; and Gabby Blasko, CMT!

Yesterday, the team responded to an unresponsive female who had recently been brought in. Kelly assessed the patient’s level of consciousness and vital signs, recognizing the immediate need for Narcan. Gabby also jumped in right away, supporting Kelly throughout the event with timekeeping and providing an extra set of hands throughout the event. Misty and Tiffany gathered essential supplies, prepared the chart for transfer, and coordinated transport with security. Their anticipation of the transport needs proved especially valuable when EMS arrived.

Staff Development Nurse Syble Harmon could not be prouder of this team, sharing: “The medical team demonstrated strong assessment skills and acted quickly and appropriately to this event. Security also played a critical role supporting the medical team by maintaining scene safety and ensuring the patient did not inadvertently harm herself or others. They provided helpful information regarding the patient’s arrest, which added important context during the event. This was a strong team effort and a great example of people stepping up, staying calm under pressure, and working together effectively.”

Moments like this reflect the professionalism, preparation, and collaboration that make a real difference when it matters most!

Cheers to our administrative professionals! You are the ones who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes—organizing, coordinating, and solving problems before they ever reach the surface. Your work may not often be visible, but the rest of us feel your positive impact every day. We could not do what we do without you!

Congratulations to Emily Scordellis, PsyD, CCHP, and Tommy Williams, BSN, RN, CCHP, for their latest publication in the NCCHC’s CorrectCare magazine. The article, Aligning Perspectives, focuses on one of the most important (and often challenging) dynamics in correctional health care: bridging the gap between medical and mental health teams to better serve the patients in our care.

Recently, our team at Monroe County Jail in NY received a letter of gratitude from a patient who wanted to recognize the care he received from the nursing staff:

“I did not know I was diabetic until I came to MCJ. During my intake interview my BG was over 400. Prior to this I had all the symptoms but was unaware of it. I rarely got out of bed and could not walk without a cane or walker. I quit working in June of ’25 because I was losing use of my hands and feet. I simply resolved to the fact that ‘this is how it’s all gonna end.’ Very troubling for me as a well-respected local chef at only 60 years old.

"Your entire nursing staff has worked tirelessly dialing in proper care for me and ensuring my numbers are within the correct margins — in essence, nothing short of saving my life or at least extending it. Since being here I now have feeling and use of my hands and feet again, no issues walking, and I’m working my butt off in both Booking and Reception as a Trustee. From the first nurse who insisted on me getting blood work, to the young ladies who track me down in Booking to check my BG levels — nobody ever forgets me. You all have jump-started my life again. I feel amazing and confident I can return to work and earn an honest living.

"You’re some of the hardest working people I know, and all so incredibly kind to me. You’ve totally made a difference in this old guy’s life. I’m truly grateful. THANK YOU!”

Stories like this also highlight the importance of proactive medical screening in correctional settings. During the intake process, our medical teams routinely screen for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other serious health concerns so that treatment can begin immediately when needed. Many individuals enter incarceration having had limited access to consistent health care, and undiagnosed or poorly managed conditions are unfortunately common.

Moments like this remind us why correctional health care matters. Compassionate care can truly change lives. We are proud of the MCJ nursing team for the difference they make in the lives of others!

Last month, members of our Butler team—Dave Jageman, Ashli Hollobaugh, Samantha Reigh, Staci Lu, Amanda Coulter, and Lenora Carson—were busy saving lives.

In the span of a single week, the team responded to an overdose, a cardiac arrest, and an attempted su***de. In each instance, the patient had no pulse. Each time, the team arrived quickly, worked together, and took action. And each time, they were able to resuscitate the patient.

Regional Manager Dawn Salsberry shared, “It’s incredible to witness such consistent, life-saving efforts. I truly believe this team saved three lives. It’s a blessing to have even one positive outcome from events like these—but to have three is almost unheard of. I am so very grateful to have this team.”

Thank you to everyone involved. Your skill, dedication, and teamwork made a difference when it mattered most! (Pictured: Dave, Ashli, Samantha, and Staci.)

March is Social Work Month. We would like to recognize the compassion and expertise of our social workers in correctional health care who serve who in an extremely challenging environment. Every day, you advocate for individuals whose voices are often unheard. You help patients navigate trauma, addiction, mental illness, and complex social barriers — all while working within a rigid system. Your work is not always visible, but its impact is profound. A crisis de-escalated. A patient connected to treatment. A plan created for continuity of care beyond incarceration. Moments of respect and empathy that remind people of their humanity when they need it most. Correctional social work requires resilience, professionalism, and extraordinary compassion. It demands the ability to see possibility where others may only see circumstance.

Thank you to our correctional health care social workers for the difference you make in the lives of others. Your work matters. Your presence matters. And the lives you touch extend far beyond the walls where you serve.
