Recently, our team at Monroe County Jail in NY received a letter of gratitude from a patient who wanted to recognize the care he received from the nursing staff:

“I did not know I was diabetic until I came to MCJ. During my intake interview my BG was over 400. Prior to this I had all the symptoms but was unaware of it. I rarely got out of bed and could not walk without a cane or walker. I quit working in June of ’25 because I was losing use of my hands and feet. I simply resolved to the fact that ‘this is how it’s all gonna end.’ Very troubling for me as a well-respected local chef at only 60 years old.

"Your entire nursing staff has worked tirelessly dialing in proper care for me and ensuring my numbers are within the correct margins — in essence, nothing short of saving my life or at least extending it. Since being here I now have feeling and use of my hands and feet again, no issues walking, and I’m working my butt off in both Booking and Reception as a Trustee. From the first nurse who insisted on me getting blood work, to the young ladies who track me down in Booking to check my BG levels — nobody ever forgets me. You all have jump-started my life again. I feel amazing and confident I can return to work and earn an honest living.

"You’re some of the hardest working people I know, and all so incredibly kind to me. You’ve totally made a difference in this old guy’s life. I’m truly grateful. THANK YOU!”

Stories like this also highlight the importance of proactive medical screening in correctional settings. During the intake process, our medical teams routinely screen for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other serious health concerns so that treatment can begin immediately when needed. Many individuals enter incarceration having had limited access to consistent health care, and undiagnosed or poorly managed conditions are unfortunately common.

Moments like this remind us why correctional health care matters. Compassionate care can truly change lives. We are proud of the MCJ nursing team for the difference they make in the lives of others!

Last month, members of our Butler team—Dave Jageman, Ashli Hollobaugh, Samantha Reigh, Staci Lu, Amanda Coulter, and Lenora Carson—were busy saving lives.

In the span of a single week, the team responded to an overdose, a cardiac arrest, and an attempted su***de. In each instance, the patient had no pulse. Each time, the team arrived quickly, worked together, and took action. And each time, they were able to resuscitate the patient.

Regional Manager Dawn Salsberry shared, “It’s incredible to witness such consistent, life-saving efforts. I truly believe this team saved three lives. It’s a blessing to have even one positive outcome from events like these—but to have three is almost unheard of. I am so very grateful to have this team.”

Thank you to everyone involved. Your skill, dedication, and teamwork made a difference when it mattered most! (Pictured: Dave, Ashli, Samantha, and Staci.)

March is Social Work Month. We would like to recognize the compassion and expertise of our social workers in correctional health care who serve who in an extremely challenging environment. Every day, you advocate for individuals whose voices are often unheard. You help patients navigate trauma, addiction, mental illness, and complex social barriers — all while working within a rigid system. Your work is not always visible, but its impact is profound. A crisis de-escalated. A patient connected to treatment. A plan created for continuity of care beyond incarceration. Moments of respect and empathy that remind people of their humanity when they need it most. Correctional social work requires resilience, professionalism, and extraordinary compassion. It demands the ability to see possibility where others may only see circumstance.

Thank you to our correctional health care social workers for the difference you make in the lives of others. Your work matters. Your presence matters. And the lives you touch extend far beyond the walls where you serve.

This past weekend, PrimeCare Medical was proud to be well represented at Penn State THON, thanks to the generous support of our CEO, Tom Weber, and his wife, Colleen Weber. THON is the world’s largest student-run philanthropic organization, and it raised an incredible $18,841,726.53 this year to fight pediatric cancer — contributing to a lifetime total of more than a quarter of a billion dollars in support of children and families through Four Diamonds. We are honored to stand alongside students, families, and community partners who dedicate themselves to this extraordinary cause. Events like THON are powerful reminders of what can happen when leadership, compassion, and collective commitment come together — all For The Kids. ⭐️Well done, Amanda Weise!⭐️

In correctional health care, excellence is often demonstrated in moments that can make the difference between crisis and safety. Recently, following a court appearance in which a patient received two life sentences without the possibility of parole, Amanda conducted a post-court evaluation. During their conversation, she observed concerning behaviors, including the patient becoming hyper-fixated on returning to his cell to pack his belongings himself. Trusting her clinical instincts and experience, Amanda made the decision to place the patient on Level 1 status and requested that custody staff conduct a thorough search of his cell before allowing him access. Her concern was that the patient might attempt self-harm given the devastating news he had just received. During the search, staff discovered a bag containing multiple medications, including a crushed medication. This was especially significant as the patient had recently been transported to the ER following a near overdose involving medications.

Amanda’s calm decision-making, situational awareness, and commitment to patient safety likely prevented a life-threatening event. Her actions reflect exceptional professionalism, resilience under pressure, and clinical expertise. Please join us in recognizing Amanda for her outstanding judgment and dedication to protecting the safety and well-being of her patient.

In correctional health care, supporting mental wellness is an essential component. Through her leadership of the Mindfulness Matters group, Devan Royal is making a meaningful impact on the individuals she serves. This group operates within the IGNITE (Inmate Growth Naturally & Intentionally Through Education) program—an initiative designed to promote personal growth through structured, intentional education and skill-building. Using psychoeducation focused on mindfulness, breathing techniques, and common mental health symptoms experienced in correctional settings, Devan equips participants with practical, evidence-based tools they can apply in their daily lives. As a certified yoga instructor, she approaches each session with thoughtful intention, ensuring the environment remains safe, structured, and trauma-informed. Patients have shared that Mindfulness Matters has improved their quality of sleep, reduced anxiety and PTSD symptoms, decreased anger, and strengthened their coping skills. Just as importantly, the group has enhanced rapport and trust — encouraging individuals who might not typically seek support to feel more comfortable reaching out.

Devan’s Mindfulness Matters group reflects the heart of correctional health care—meeting people where they are and equipping them with tools that promote growth, self-awareness, and emotional regulation. Thank you, Devan, for igniting positive change!

Black Americans have shaped the United States in fundamental ways, and our nation’s greatness is inseparable from their contributions. Enslaved Africans built much of the country’s early economic foundation. Black inventors, scientists, and physicians advanced medicine, agriculture, transportation, and technology. Black artists, writers, and musicians shaped American culture and influenced the world. Black soldiers have fought in every US war. Black activists and leaders—from Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman to Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks—forced us to confront our country’s contradictions and expand civil rights, and justice for all.

Black History Month is not only about honoring past achievements, but about recognizing the ongoing struggle for equity and the vital work people of color continue to do every day to make this nation great. Black history is American history.
