Recognizing a stroke quickly can save a life. 🧠⏱️

Remember BE FAST:
Balance – sudden loss of balance or coordination
Eyes – sudden vision changes
Face – face drooping on one side
Arms – arm weakness or numbness
Speech – slurred or hard-to-understand speech
Time – call 911 immediately

Strokes are medical emergencies. If you notice any of these signs—even if they come and go—don’t wait. Acting fast can reduce long-term damage and save lives. Share this to help others know the signs.

Here’s a scary fact: Only an estimated 36% of people in the U.S. know even one of the signs of a stroke. A neurologist explains how the acronym BE FAST can help you remember the six major signs of a stroke.

Late-night snacking—good or bad? 🍽️🌙

According to Cleveland Clinic experts, eating right before bed can affect your sleep and digestion, especially if the meal is large, heavy, or high in sugar or fat. It may increase heartburn, disrupt blood sugar levels, and make it harder for your body to fully rest.

That said, going to bed hungry isn’t ideal either. If you need a bedtime snack, choose something light and balanced—think protein with a small carb—and try to finish eating at least 2–3 hours before sleep when possible.

Bottom line: what and when you eat matters. Making mindful choices can support better sleep and overall health.

The holidays are often called “the happiest time of the year,” but for many people, they can also be stressful — and that’s okay. 💛

Here are a few helpful reminders from NAMI on managing holiday stress:

✨ Let go of perfection. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Focus on what truly matters to you.
🧠 Remember everyone’s experience is different. It’s okay if the holidays feel overwhelming or bittersweet — you’re not alone.
🤍 Be kind to yourself (and others). Compassion goes a long way during a busy, emotional season.
⏸️ Make time to decompress. Rest, routine, movement, and nourishment can help ground you when things feel hectic.
🙋‍♀️ Ask for help — and accept it. You don’t have to do everything on your own.

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as checking off a to-do list. Give yourself permission to slow down and celebrate in a way that feels right for you. 🎄💙

❄️🧤 Stay Safe on the Ice This Holiday Season!
With winter weather arriving, Mayo Clinic experts are reminding everyone to take extra care on icy sidewalks and parking lots — especially during the busy holiday rush. Here are some simple tips to help prevent falls:

➡️ Wear boots with good traction (ice grips can help!)
➡️ Take slow, short, “penguin-style” steps
➡️ Use handrails or a cane for stability
➡️ Avoid going out when conditions are dangerously slick
➡️ If you do fall, try to land on your side or back — not your hands — to reduce injury

A few mindful steps can help keep your season merry, bright, and injury-free! ❄️👣

Baking is a great way to celebrate the holidays. When making cookies, brownies, cakes, or bread, you might be tempted to taste a bite before it’s fully baked. But you can get sick after eating or tasting raw (unbaked) dough or batter. So please resist the urge to do so.

Eating raw flour, eggs, or dough can lead to food poisoning.

Our Story

The Pennsylvania Osteopathic Family Physicians Society (POFPS) is a divisional society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. POFPS represents over 1,000 licensed osteopathic family physicians, plus residents and interns, in Pennsylvania.

The embryo of the ACOFP Pennsylvania chapter was formed over lunch at the Lincoln Hotel in Reading, PA in 1960. The three founding members were Earl Gabriel, DO, FACOFP, George Essayian, DO, FACOFP, and Paul Herr, DO, FACOFP.

The Pennsylvania Chapter, POFPS, has grown to be one of the largest in the ACOFP.
