Sunnyside Communities

Sunnyside Communities The Sunnyside campus is situated in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Residents here take in many galleries, shops, eateries and museums, often just a short stroll away.

Sunnyside Communities is a nonprofit senior living organization with three Virginia campuses, offering vibrant lifestyles, exceptional care, and a welcoming home for adults 55 and better for more than 110 years. Homes here have the breathtaking backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a direct view of Massanutten Peak. Sparkling ponds, gently rolling hills and beautiful gardens make Sunnyside a "little slice of heaven" for those who reside there. Summit Square in Waynesboro, Virginia is located right in the heart of this charming town, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Summit Square is best defined as "small town living, big city charm". King's Grant is a magnificent campus on over 120 acres of colorful gardens, blending gracefully into the natural beauty of the surrounding fields, lakes and streams. Located in historic Martinsville, Virginia, cottages and apartment homes are tastefully placed to enjoy panoramic views. King's Grant is a community "surrounded by beauty, defined by charm".

Easter arrives across Sunnyside Communities with a quiet sense of renewal. The season shifts, light lingers a little longer, and each campus begins to bloom in its own way.

At Sunnyside Retirement Community, it is felt in the steady rhythm of connection and care.
At King's Grant Retirement Community, it unfolds in peaceful surroundings and moments of reflection.
At Summit Square Retirement Community, it comes alive in the character and energy that shape each day.

Different places. Shared spirit.

A reminder that new beginnings are always within reach, and that the most meaningful moments are often the simplest ones.

Wishing you an Easter filled with peace, hope, and renewal from all of us at Sunnyside Communities.

This morning, Summit Square and VPAS board member Shelly Zollner joined Sunnyside Rehab Director Rick Loudon for a fun and meaningful time at the VPAS Café, kindly hosted at Bridgewater Retirement Community.

It is always special to spend time together with our sister communities and others across the Valley. At the end of the day, we are all here for the same reason, caring for older adults, and it is something worth coming together for.

Rick led a lively and informative round of Therapy Bingo that brought both learning and plenty of laughs to the morning.

Today we celebrate the compassion, skill, and dedication of our Certified Nurses.

Every day, they show up with steady hands and caring hearts, supporting residents through moments big and small. Their work brings comfort, dignity, and reassurance to those they serve, and their kindness leaves a lasting impact on our community.

From early mornings to late evenings, their commitment never goes unnoticed. We are deeply grateful for the care they provide and the difference they make each day.

From all of us at Sunnyside Communities, thank you and Happy Certified Nurses Day

Yesterday, the Development team hosted a lovely donor appreciation gathering at Sunnyside in honor of members of the Evergreen Fellowship. The event, called Emerald Hour, was a special members only happy hour held in appreciation of their committed generosity and steadfast support of the Fellowship Fund.

Many of the guests in attendance have been faithful supporters of Sunnyside for decades, with some giving for more than 35 years. Their contributions help sustain the community’s Fellowship Fund, which provides meaningful support to residents in times of need.

Similar Evergreen appreciation gatherings will be held at Summit Square and King’s Grant later this spring as we continue to celebrate the generosity and longstanding commitment of those who help strengthen our communities.

March is National Social Work Month, and today we’re celebrating the heart behind the profession.

If you ask a social worker in a senior living community what their job is, the answer is rarely simple.

One moment, they’re helping a new resident and their family navigate a big life transition. The next, they’re advocating for a resident’s needs with a healthcare team, offering guidance during a difficult diagnosis, or simply sitting with someone who needs to talk. Social work in a senior living community means walking alongside people during some of the most meaningful and sometimes challenging moments of life.

It’s about listening.
It’s about advocacy.
It’s about helping residents maintain dignity, independence, and connection.

At Sunnyside Communities, our social workers are an essential part of the care team. They help coordinate services, support emotional wellbeing, guide families through complex decisions, and ensure every resident’s voice is heard.

More than anything, they build relationships. They know our residents’ stories, celebrate their milestones, and stand beside them when they need support.

This month, we’re grateful for the compassion, patience, and dedication our social workers bring to our communities every single day. 💙

Today is National Registered Dietitian Day, and we are proud to recognize the essential role our dietitians play in healthcare across Sunnyside Communities.

Registered dietitians are a vital part of the care team. They work closely with physicians, nurses, therapists, and dining teams to ensure residents receive the nutrition they need to support healing, strength, and overall wellbeing. From managing complex medical diets to helping residents maintain healthy weight, control blood sugar, or recover after illness, their work directly impacts health outcomes every day.

Beyond clinical care, they also help residents navigate the connection between food and quality of life. That means balancing medical needs with personal preferences, cultural traditions, and the simple joy of a good meal shared with friends.

At Sunnyside Communities, we are grateful for the knowledge, compassion, and collaboration our registered dietitians bring to our healthcare teams. Their expertise helps residents not only live well, but truly thrive.

Spring is sneaking in.

This weekend we move our clocks forward and gain an extra hour of evening light. Longer sunsets, brighter afternoons, and one step closer to warm days on the porch at Sunnyside.

Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead before bed on Saturday night.

It is Employee Appreciation Day across Sunnyside Communities, and we are celebrating the teams who make Sunnyside, Summit Square, and King’s Grant extraordinary.

Every nurse. Every CNA. Every server. Every housekeeper. Every maintenance tech. Every life enrichment leader. Every therapist. Every teammate behind the scenes making it all work.

You show up with professionalism and heart. You know names. You notice details. You turn ordinary days into meaningful ones.

Because of you, our communities are not just places to live. They are places to belong.

Today, and every day, we are grateful for you.

In 1912, a charter was granted in Danville, Virginia, planting the seeds for what would become Sunnyside Communities. In 1921, Sunnyside Home opened its doors to women seeking comfort, community, and care. By 1954, the organization moved to Harrisonburg and became Sunnyside Presbyterian Home.

More than a century later, the mission still stands. Rooted in compassion. Built on community. Always evolving.
