Our Story

Appalachian Physical Therapy was first opened in Pennington Gap, Virginia in 1986 by Bill Whiteford and Colleen Murphy. It began as a small outpatient practice, with contracts serving nursing home residents and homebound patients. One year later, Bill and Colleen felt compelled to move to the Shenandoah Valley. In November 1987, Appalachian Physical Therapy relocated to the Harrison Plaza in downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia. Bill and Colleen were married in 1988. Their practice continued to grow, and in 1993 Appalachian Physical Therapy relocated to a larger facility on Deyerle Avenue in Harrisonburg, behind the Valley Mall, complete with a pool and fitness center. It began as a small outpatient practice, with contracts serving nursing home residents and home-bound patients.

Smaller satellite offices were later opened in Broadway, on South Main Street in Harrisonburg, and in Bridgewater. Gradual expansion led to clinics in Richmond, Virginia and Pinehurst, North Carolina. Bill and Colleen found the smaller offices to be more convenient and easier to staff, and the large office building behind the mall was sold in July 2004.

Appalachian Physical Therapy has been and continues to be a Christian based practice owned by physical therapists. Our focus is on excellence in treatment. We provide hands-on care in a comprehensive approach that considers the needs of the person as a whole.
