The Traumatic Stress Institute (TSI) celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Risking Connection (RC) with a finale event for our RC community. Thank you to our special guests, keynote speaker, and RC community members who made it so meaningful:
We heard from some of those present at RC’s inception: those who listened to the lived experience of consumer trauma survivors and knew that the mental health system could do better (Melodie Peet); to the matchmaker and publisher (Dr. Beth Hudnall Stamm and Esther Giller) who found the organization and team that would create RC; to the creators who ensured the curriculum centered the needs of survivors and helpers alike (Dr. Kay Saakvitne). We were also honored to have TSI co-founder Dr. Dan Abrahamson, with us.
Noel Casiano, PsyD, LMFT shared in his keynote advice for staying rooted in our connection with each other while facing the many challenges in our present and reclaiming our hope.
RC Trainers Rachel Schein, Psy.D. and Samira Vishria shared creative ways they’ve kept RC thriving at their organizations, followed by breakout sessions where attendees shared their own experiences.
Finally, RC co-author and TSI co-founder Dr. Laurie Pearlman and newer RC Trainer Jasmine Bryant, LCSW, discussed their different perspectives, from the vision of what RC could be - a guide for working with trauma survivors using an approach that was theory-based, respectful, collective, and effective - to the system change model it has developed into today.
