Hartford Police Department is proud to partner with Clara Martin Center to support the Health Sciences class at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC). The class has been working on their Basic Life Support (BLS) training. As part of the BLS certification training, students practiced with Narcan trainers and learned about overdose recognition and response. Narcan (Naloxone) is a commonly used op**te reversal medication. After completing their training, the discussion turned to trained students carrying Narcan so they could help if they encountered a suspected overdose in real life. The class asked if the Hartford Police Department could help with a donation of Narcan and we were pleased to partner with Clara Martin Center, where our embedded substance use responder Kaitlin George works, to secure a donation from them to the Health Sciences class of 24 doses of Narcan. Lt. Furnari delivered the doses to Mrs. Brown on Friday. Lt. Furnari is also excited to visit the class after the holidays to talk about real world experiences dealing with overdoses and make sure students are aware of best practices to keep them safe in the event they come upon a suspected overdose. At the Hartford Police Department we work hard every day to stem the tide of drugs entering our community. We are also committed to combatting the stigma around substance use disorder (SUD) so we can help those in our community who are struggling. It has been shown that a collaborative approach to overdoses is the best way to help our whole community. We are proud of our high school students' commitment to service and willingness to help those in need. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use disorder, please call the Hartford Police Department Outreach Division at (802) 295-9425 option 2.
