Thanksgiving meal myths and beliefs 🦃 I’m here to give you the facts you need around needing to “earn” your food, bloating after meals, and digestion!

What else do you think about when it comes to tomorrow’s meal? I would love to answer your questions!

Next up in this series where I answer all your diet questions: does calories in vs. calories out actually work?

We’ve all heard it. We’ve seen it recommended. Diet culture shouts it from the rooftops - “just eat less and watch the weight fall off!” Ugh. It’s so simplified and makes me cringe, there are many factors that go into calculating how many calories an individual needs (and this amount can change by the week, day, hour!) as well as how many calories are in the foods we eat. And as I have shared before, restricting typically leads to water weight loss and then regaining that - it’s not sustainable!

Swipe through to see some of the science behind this myth, and what you can do instead.

Save your precious time for things other than calorie counting or tracking macros: learn to honor your hunger and fullness cues, appreciate your body, prioritize joyful movement, and live your freaking life!!

**There are some health conditions that do require tracking certain macro and micronutrients, please follow the advice of your individual health practitioner.

Coping statements to use when recovering from binge eating or bulimia. There are affirmations and reminders, and know that you can practice saying any of these on your own and change them to be more true to you.

If you are working on this and continuing to be stuck in the binge cycle, it is highly recommended you work with both a dietitian and a therapist.

The PAUSE skill mentioned here was developed by , a therapist who specializes in treating eating disorders. I use this skill with many of my clients who struggle with binge eating, emotional eating, or overeating. You can search on her name and pause skill to find it, or go to my blog (link in profile) for more specific information on this helpful skill.

When it comes to changing our eating habits, it’s not one size fits all. It’s a behavioral approach and the most effective way out is through skills, not though a set meal plan or specific macro count. Those pieces can come into place once the skills and mindset are in alignment.

Today I’m answering another reader question: why am I bloated? It’s uncomfortable and can be constant, annoying, and even painful. There are things you can do to decrease the bloated feeling. In today’s response, I walk you through several causes of bloat and what you can do about it.

Bloating is especially common in those struggling with eating disorder behaviors, so make sure to read to the end of the slides for more info on that specific approach.

Take care out there 💜

New series I’m pumped about: tackling YOUR questions! 🙌

Coming in with answers for all the diet myths, nutrition fads, sports nutrition, supplement, or any other nutrition-related questions you may have!

Today’s is a special favorite and one that covers both eating disordered thoughts (myth that we have to earn our food by burning calories) and a bit of sports nutrition and science (breaking down the TDEE on page 3) 💪

Leave your next question in comments or shoot me a DM 📩

Why won’t I put you on a diet? It’s not that I don’t want you to lose weight, or that I won’t work with you if that’s a goal (that would be excluding the majority of the population!), it’s just not the deciding factor in our treatment plan. If you’re above your biologically appropriate weight (where your body biologically wants you to be) then your weight will naturally settle with the appropriate combination of food, movement, self-care, and emotional care (which more than likely includes working with a therapist).

I don’t guarantee weight loss. What I do promise, if you’re willing to work on it, is a more peaceful relationship with food and your body. 💗

I focus on behaviors, not weight, as measures of your health and our collaborative success. 💪

Hi! It’s been a minute so wanted to provide a few professional updates:
- I recently left my (nearly) full-time job as a dietitian at a behavioral hospital. It was a hard decision which I made for many reasons and I’m grateful to have the option to step back from that type of work for now (never say never!)👩‍⚕️
- I am spending the summer with my kids, and on the side, when we have childcare, I’m also starting back up 🌈☀️
- I’m expanding my virtual services to Minnesota! 🌲
- I’ll have space to take on a few new clients by the end of this summer if you or anyone you know needs a non-diet dietitian 🥗🍕🍪🍎

Any questions about what I do? Leave a comment or send a DM!

I’ve been thinking about my own food motto lately, what guides my food choices and my approach towards eating. This is similar to Michael Pollan’s food motto (eat food, not too much, mostly plants) without the orthorexic slant. 🤦‍♀️

So what exactly is good food? And what do I mean by balanced? Head to the link in my bio for my BLOG POST explaining my thoughts on this and more ✨ (www.jodanutrition.com/blog)

I did a calming meditation with of last night and this was my main takeaway. Aditi talked about letting go of thoughts we’re holding onto that do not serve us.

I love the idea of using our thoughts as information, pieces of the puzzle, and gathering them all up to understand ourselves better and more fully.

If you are experiencing body image issues (which can look like a lot of different things, this post shares a few more common ways I’ve seen it expressed), I’d encourage you to use your negative body image thoughts as information. Remain curious. Seek the underlying emotion.

And then if and when you’re ready, imagine living without the belief that you are ugly/fat/unworthy or that you’d be happier if you were thinner/skinnier/prettier.

Would you be willing to do anything different with your life? Would your life have space to be filled with other thoughts and feelings and experiences?

It can be overwhelming to let go, so this practice was intended to help you imagine letting go. And see what your life may look like without it ✨

Halloween, and holiday seasons in general, can feel scary if you don’t trust yourself around food. I’m here to say: it doesn’t have to be that way!

🍬Instead of limiting scary foods, try incorporating them into your weekly (or daily) routine. Normalize them and eat them alongside other foods.
🍬Focus on making most of your meals complete and balanced (complex carbs, protein, added fats, fiber).
🍬Enjoy your desserts and sweets and other social foods. They are not “bad” and you are not bad for eating them.
🍬If you do end up overeating, it is okay! Please see my other post on binge eating.
🍬Work on developing body trust and truly trusting yourself around foods.

🎃Happy Halloween! May your day be filled with more treats than tricks. 🎃

Hi there! Time for another introduction 👋 my name is Melissa Joda Moody and I’m the dietitian behind Joda Nutrition. I work basically full-time at a behavioral hospital with teens with emotional dysregulation and related disordered eating/eating disorder behaviors. I love what I do there AND I am enjoying starting this account on the side along with seeing a limited number of clients. I am passionate about helping others see their own light 💗 I hope to make an intuitive eating course in the future so stay tuned! ✨

My husband Simon and I have two kids and we love going on mini adventures with them. We live in Wisconsin and try our best to embrace every season 🌱☀️🍁❄️

A few random facts about me because I always find these fun to read:
- I’m the only one in my little family of four without dual citizenship 🇺🇸🇬🇧
- My favorite Thanksgiving foods are roasted brussel sprouts and apple crumble (I honestly could pass on most of the rest of the foods) 🍎
- I am chronically late but am working on it ⏱
- I used to be an actuary in health consulting and can still make a mean Excel spreadsheet 📊

Your turn! What’s something about you that surprises people or that you don’t often think to share. 🥸
