Today is World Mental Health Day! I wanted to give you a few myths you might believe about mental health.

People use behaviors to get attention
Truth
People use behaviors to get attention because they are lacking the connection with people.
Myth
If you have a mental health problem, you are crazy!
Truth
Having a mental health problem does not mean your crazy, it means you are having symptoms that may make you feel crazy but do not make you crazy
Myth
It is all in your head
Truth
People who suffer with mental health problems often present with physical problems. Sometimes when there is a chronic illness, mental health will present but that is because of the pain and fatigue it causes.
Myth
Medication shouldn’t be used
Truth
Medication can help you, in calming some of the symptoms that present. With both medication and counseling, you can start to see a difference. If you are willing to take medication to help you with a physical problem, you should take the same mind set with mental health medication.
Myth
To be suicidal you must be depressed
Truth
You can have suicidal thoughts and behaviors without being depressed.
Myth
Counseling is a place to go and cry and feel all the emotions, which makes you weak.
Truth
Counseling can cause some crying and definitely help you with your feeling, but it is not a sign of weakness. There is so much strength in asking for help. Some people are too afraid to ask due to the stigma.
Myth
Family secrets are to be kept in the family
Truth
Family secrets cause family dysfunction and increase stress on the individuals. When speaking to a therapist, you are not just telling the secrets just to tell them. You are asking for help and want to know what you can do about this big family secrets (us therapist are really good at keeping secrets!
